3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Theresa Baldwin on May 24, 2009
Since this is the only brand of 9-speed freewheel I could find I bought one. The quality is poor though since this is the thirn one I've put on my bike that isn't obnoxiously loud (and I don't mean the ratcheting sound). The first one had something wrong in the freewheel mechanism causing it to sound like something was scraping whenever coasting, and the second one had an oscillating scraping saound whenever coasting. Both were so loud they were embarrasing if another rider was around. As soon as another company comes out with another 9spee threaded freewheel I'll buy one. (I bought the other 2 from other sources. I have no negative comments about the vendor.)

It's heavy but solid. Shifts smoothly and the ratcheting seems flawless on mine. Your only option for a 9 speed freewheel but definitely a good product. Machining on splines could be better, but that my only complaint, we'll see what happens if I need to remove it, although it really shouldn't be an issue.

Side note: If you plan on putting this on a 5 speed wheel, the wheel will require a major re-dishing. Not hard to do yourself with a spoke wrench. Also if your 5 speed wheel uses a quick release axle, it might not be long enough to protrude pass the end of the freewheel. Just things to keep in mind, but they can be remedied.

I upgraded my road bike from 3x7 friction shifting to 3x9 index shifting. This 9 speed Sunrace freewheel was slightly wider than the old 7 speed freewheel. That caused the chain to rube the chain stay when running on the 13 sprocket. A 1/16" brass washer expanded the rear dropout just enough to stop the rub. A previous reviewer has had annoying mechanical noise generated from this freewheel. I have had similar problems with 7 speed Shimano freewheels. So far this 9 speed has been trouble and noise free.
