4.0 out of 5 stars Fun waffle/sandwich maker
This is a small waffle maker that comes with three sets of plates - one for standard waffles, one that makes a cow and a duck waffle, and one that serves as a sandwich press. The plates are easy to snap on and off for swapping. It heats up quickly & cooks well. The animal plates are cute, and are the main reason I picked this item - the kids love them. My two...

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, under-delivered
For the price I recommend going with a better waffle-maker.

It's nonstick ability is a joke. Without damaging / washing the plates I still need to use excessive non-stick spray, and reapply the spray every other batch or risk of waffles being torn apart by sticking to the sides.

The size is prohibitively small. If you're cooking for only 1 or 2,...

My two hesitations - I think this is a little overpriced for the size, and it is hard to clean if waffle batter seeps out the back, which seems to be inevitable. Otherwise, we are enjoying it. The fact that the plates pop off and go in the dishwasher is great.

It's nonstick ability is a joke. Without damaging / washing the plates I still need to use excessive non-stick spray, and reapply the spray every other batch or risk of waffles being torn apart by sticking to the sides.

The size is prohibitively small. If you're cooking for only 1 or 2, you're OK, but if you plan to make waffles for 3+ people be prepared to spend a lot of time standing and waiting.

The spill design is HORRID. If you accidentally overfill the plates, even marginally, the only spill point is to the back of the unit, where the batter will run inside the power input. I needed to get a screwdriver to open the unit to clean it out, and noticed that batter had seeped all the way into the power line connection jacks. Be *very* careful to avoid potential electric shorts. (Not a problem once you get used to the small size of the plates, you won't overfill as I did on my first trial).

Finally: NOT RECOMMENDED. Not only is it not worth the price listed here, I don't think any price is reasonable, unless you pick it up at a yard-sale for a nickel.

Terrible as a waffle maker, but may be useful as a sandwich maker in a dorm-room.

Given a 2-star rating instead of a 1-star since it does do the job it claims to do, albeit poorly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Non stick is a joke, January 13, 2010

I loved the 3 plates change system, but after less than 6 months, I need to replace this iron maker as the "nonstick" plates just stick and ruin the waffles, no matter how much oil I spray them with. I made sure to scrape them with a wooden spoon but my husband put them in the dishwasher and I think that it was what damaged them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke after three uses, September 5, 2010
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
I would definitely not recommend this product. I was happy with it originally. The first day the animal waffles came out beautifully and my son loved them. Then changing the plates to the sandwich maker was a real challenge, so I didn't use it for lunch as I had planned because I was too frustrated. Once I got the sandwich plates in the next day (after another long struggle and a lot of muscle), it made great grilled cheese sandwiches on two separate days. When I tried to change the plates back to waffles, they refused to snap in and just kept falling off. Very annoying! I didn't notice much of a mess in the cleanup when I used it, but there is black stuff that is crusted where the plates snap in that seems to be melted plastic from the device and the reason why it is no longer holding the plates in place. I expected much better from Sunbeam!

5.0 out of 5 stars Duck/Cow Waffle Maker/Sandwich Maker, August 31, 2010

Neon "~Neon~" (God Bless America!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
Overall, this waffle maker/sandwich maker is everything it is supposed to be. It makes the waffles and sandwiches and we eat them :) My son wanted the "duck" waffle maker, and I wanted a sandwich maker and I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so this was defiantely all around the best option for us.

A couple of the plates don't fit without applying pressure to set them in place, but they do go in and they cook. The non stick is great, thus far. I only hand wash them with a soft dish cloth. I use a wooden fork to take the waffles out (if needed, sometimes I can grab them bare handed) to avoid scratching the non-stick plates.

I've only had this a few weeks and we've used it at least 1/2 dozen times. I like it :)

The first few times I used it, it spilled a lot out the back and it was hard to clean. I learned that I need to let the waffle batter sit for a little while (ten minutes???) before I pour it, otherwise it expands too much while cooking and overflows. I determined this because I used the amount that was suggested and it only seemed to happen with the first pour of the batch, but the 2nd, 3rd, 4th pours were perfect. I was also getting less waffles out of the batch when I didn't let it set before using.

3.0 out of 5 stars Go to Target!, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
I love Amazon but I just saw this at Target for $19.99. It was an everyday price, not a sale. I came here hoping Aamzon would have it cheaper.

PS. I gave 3 stars bc it forced me to choose. I do not own this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for toasted sandwiches, January 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
I use this only for toasted sandwiches so this review is for those only.

Overall - pretty good. it heats up quite quickly and the sandwiches come out well though I prefer to leave them a little longer than when the light comes on to say that they are done. That's personal preference and not a fault of the device.

Having the plates be removable is a huge advantage when cleaning them. You can leave them to soak in water as long as you like, (they are not steel so they don't rust) which helps a lot if you get food stuck on them. I consider this to be inevitable since stuff will spill out of over-filled sandwiches - that's down to my greediness, not the machine. The non-stick coating looks reasonable to me; after 6 months there are no marks on it but I am careful not to do anything stupid like scrape it with a knife, or wire pads. I have used a green plastic scouring pad on the plates and that has not harmed them.

It is just a little hard to clean. the area at the back, behind the hinges gets overspill into it which is hard to clean off. Having said that, it is much easier to clean than my old sandwich maker, which did not have removable plates. Four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars quality = price, September 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
Quality of this appliance is not the best but it does the job and for the price you can't complain. The only downside that I have noticed so far is that some of the plastic parts have already broken off (after 1 use) but it still functions properly. Also use less batter than recommended when making waffles because it will overflow into the back of the waffle maker. It is really hard to clean all the nooks and crannies behind machine. Removable plates are easy to clean which is a huge +.

I purchased this with my grandchildren in mind. They love having waffles shaped like a duck or a cow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Junk!, October 12, 2010
This review is from: Sunbeam 3864 Nonstick Waffle and Sandwich Maker with 3 Removable Plates (Kitchen)
If the interface would have allowed me to choose zero stars I would have. This thing is the epitome of Singapore junk. If you are thinking about buying this waffle maker take my advice and save yourself some time. Take the money out of your wallet and burn it! You will find that less painful and get the same effect...a waste of money.

As soon as it cools down enough to not start a fire, I'll be throwing mine in the trash.
