5.0 out of 5 stars For Kids of All Ages, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunbeam and the Wave (Weewisdom Books) (Hardcover)
As a grown up reader, I must say that this book is truly enchanting. I enjoyed the reading, and the artwork was fantastic. Children of all ages will enjoy this work. The lessons on friendship taught by the author are exactly what children today need, and adults would not be hurt by the refresher course. Yes, it is a children's story, but aren't we all children at heart anyway?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, spiritual message w/out being preachy - 2nd-4th grade level, April 28, 2011

This review is from: The Sunbeam and the Wave (Weewisdom Books) (Hardcover)
This is a nice children's book published by Unity Church, mostly about friendship between an ocean wave and a sunbeam. But it raises a lot of other issues as well - nature, nurturing, handling fears, bed time themes, oneness, etc.

The reading level is inappropriately marked, which may be why this book has not caught on more. I would estimate a *minimum* 2nd grade reading level. Some of the pages have up to 15 lines (250 words per page), and trying to sound out words like "impatiently" and "bellowing" would just frustrate a kindergartener.

Plus it has some abstract themes - "the majesty of everything", "oneness with nature", infinity - which are fantastic themes to introduce to your child, but may be a stretch for some 2nd graders.

Highly recommended. I like the universal spiritual themes, without being preachy or specific to any one faith tradition. Appropriate even for public school teachers, but not for youngsters. I would say 2nd to 4th grade reading levels, and even up to 5th or 6th grade for struggling readers. The illustrations may be a bit young for 5th-6th, but the themes and imagery will keep them engaged.
