Far superior to electric blankets,
By Paul M. (Collegeville, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunbeam heated mattress pad, KING size. (Kitchen)
Even though I live in a drafty colonial stone farmhouse, I didn't realize until recently that my sleep problems during the winter months were so temperature related. Sweating under down comforters, having electric blankets slide off the bed and awakening to my feet hitting cold spots were the culprits until I purchased a heated mattress pad. The Sunbeam king sized model proved to be the best value with its dual 10-step controls, even heating and automatic shut-off after ten hours. With the heat emanating from underneath, the entire bed surface is pleasantly warm and I am comfortable all night with only a thin acrylic blanket and cotton spread to contain the heat. I've found that setting the thermostats on 'High' about an hour before bed and turning them back to '3' or '4' while sleeping works best. One minor problem is that the controls don't start the coils heating in the lowest temperature settings. They should be set at '8' or above to first warm the bed and then moved back for a night free of cold spots. Other than this minor issue, I'm extremely pleased with both the comfort and my improved quality of winter sleep.

Happy With the one I bought 2 Years Ago,
By MI Mud Puppy "buzz" (northeast Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunbeam heated mattress pad, KING size. (Kitchen)
Because Sunbeam seems to have changed the specs since I bought mine I only gave this version 4 stars as I obviously haven't got the exact same model. Mine has 20 temperature settings not 10 and a pre-heat setting that heats up the pad quickly and then powers down to your selected setting. (I assume the new version doesn't pre-heat per its own description and the other review. I can guess only that this simpler system makes it cheaper to manufacture and keeps the price under $100, too bad.)
However, I do like being able to turn the house thermostat down to 60 at night and use this to keep my husband and me toasty warm. Plus with those dual controls he can have his side warmer than I like. I have also machine washed mine once so far (gentle cycle) with no problems. I think having heat at the bottom makes a lot more sense than an electric blanket since as we know, heat rises. Why heat the room air? Electricity is not cheap. I also bought a queen size for the guest room. Have had no complaints about the cold. I am considering buying another.

Sunbeam heated mattress pad buzzes!,

This review is from: Sunbeam heated mattress pad, KING size. (Kitchen)
We are now on our third (3rd) queen size heated mattress pad (the first two were replaced under warrantee) and this is the first one where we have experienced this problem. I'm thinking that the wires extend too far up under the pillows as I can hear buzzing from the pad through the pillow when the heat is on and then it stops when the thermostat says it is warm enough. I lost about 1 1/2 hours of sleep last night due to this. Sunbeam says "put a blanket over it"! That didn't work. I'm calling them again tomorrow and we'll see what the next 'fix' is!
