Nifty Planter,
By Putting the unit together is literally a toolless snap that can be done without consulting the directions. Step one of the directions advise placing the base in a permament location and then filling it with dirt or sand to stabilize it. I opted to skip this unnecessary step allowing me to do the assembly near my deck. If one opts to, the bottom reservoir can be filled later. The handy cavity can be filled with dirt and covered with the snap on lid or can be filled with garden tools, again protected by the snap on lid. If one chooses not to take advantage of the upside down planting option, the base can be used for additional planting. I'm using my unit to grow only one upside down tomato, an adventure I've never tried. On the top of the unit I have beans growing and cascading over the sides. The upper planter is perfect for vines and any type of cascading plant. Peas would be great as well as any flowering vines. This is a cleverly designed unit that Mrs. Spudman and I are totally enjoying. Though the unit is not unattractive, I'm thinking about spray painting the second unit's exterior with one of those "plastic" spray paints. This handy, mobile, reusable unit gets two thumbs up from me.

This review is from: Suncast PLT2500 44-Inch by 21-Inch by 21-Inch Upside Down Tomato Tower Resin Garden Station (Lawn & Patio)
I used the Tomato Tower last year, and the hanging plants did o'kay, but they were easily accessible to chipmunks and squirrels who perfected their trapeze act while enjoying the fruits of my labors. This year I planted some Husky Patio Tomato plants in the upside down fashion, but also planted several of the tomato plants top-side along with various herbs. The top side plants (full sun) did much better than the hanging ones, and they did far better than I have ever had them do in the ground. I added a couple of short stakes late season to support the weight of the abundant fruit. The tower is great. You can use fresh dirt each year to avoid disease. The high raised bed keeps plants away from animals. Limited space means limited water and plant food requirements, but you get a big product return per square inch! We added a simple container drip irrigtion system, so this summer's super heat has had minimal effect in spite of our weekend trips.
