You do need to hand guide it while coiling, but this is not a big deal.
Deneice Knauss
For those of you who would like the hydro-powered assist for recoiling your garden hoses, this is a great little reel.

Since I could not find the exact model again, I went with this cheaper one but it's really annoying.

The unit does rewind automatically as advertised but unlike another model Suncast unit I have, this one lacks a guide for the hose as it retracts. Consequently, you need to manually guide the hose back and forth as it retracts which gets you just as dirty as a manual rewind that needs to be guided.

The water reel actually works. Can't imagine hand cranking 100 ' of hose after every use. You need to feed the hose line steadily back onto the reel or it slips to the side and gets stuck, but I much prefer the open design to the boxed-in design in which it's a struggle to connect hose ends.

I installed this on a brick wall and for some reason its foot base disconnected from the reel and fell off the wall, breaking the other feet that didn't disconnect. Poor quality. The auto reel worked well but a bit pointless when it's so called "sturdy" design breaks the first day it's installed.

I had previously purchased a suncast no-crank for my yard but needed another for the back. This time I needed more hose length so I purchased this one through Amazon for less money than my local stores. It is a great product and I prefer the open housing. You do have to make sure you guide the hose with your hands and stand directly in front of the housing or it will get entwined in the sides as it reels in because there is no spindle on these to guide the hose. That's a small price to pay for such a great product and this one holds more hose length than We would ever need for our acre of yard. This is the only one I found that holds more than 125' of hose. I highly reccomend this product. Do not leave it out through the winter if you live in a very cold climate!

I bought this to replace a similar unit by ReelSmart which I had for over 6 years (someone broke the old one). This looks almost identical and works great like the other one did. Some water does leak where the hose connects to the unit, and I am almost certain I lined the threads up correctly, but regardless it does not affect the operation of the unit. To avoid it rolling up favoring one side of the unit I find if I place my foot about two feet away from the unit and to the center it evenly distributes the hose around the reel. I plan to put a hose guide in that location. I recommend this product to all gardeners. It has made gardening so much better since there is no more hassle winding the hose.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found this water-powered rewinding hose reel disappointing.

Pros:
- It delivers on the promise of retracting a relatively heavy hose using water power alone, with surprisingly capable torque. To retract my 100 foot hose, it appears to "exhaust" about 12 gallons of water in the process.

Cons:
- It's constructed of relatively lightweight, "cheap feel" plastic resin.
- It didn't include a "leader hose", so two hoses are needed for operation out of the box (one probably short for connecting to the main supply, and one long for the reel)
- My Gilmour 20 Series 5/8-Inch-by-100-Foot 8-Ply Flexogen hose *barely* fits when fully wound on the reel. Unless you have the patience (and the hose flexibility) to rewind the hose as shown in the picture, it's unlikely that all but the thinnest gauge 150-foot hoses will fit on the reel.
- The design flaw that gets this overpriced reel a 2-star rating: the connection point for the leader hose is PLASTIC, and requires the male leader hose to be awkwardly twisted into a secure position. Have you ever tried to connect to a faucet with a hose that has a broken or stuck tightening ring? It's like that, but one side has plastic threads, so there's no room for error. As the directions indicate in several places, if you happen to misalign the threads, they'll become stripped with no option for repair. How hard would it have been to include a traditional brass screw-down hose connector? For that matter, why couldn't the unit include a leader hose? Disappointing, especially for the price.

I would not want to be without the water=powered hose winder that I ordered thru Amazon. It is a Suncast. I have a hard time with the crank type because of the position you are in when cranking. Tough on the back. I just guide the hose with my foot as it is automatically winding. love it.
