I got this item this week and needed to use it to spread salt. I found the item barely useable. Unlike the Scott's Handheld Spreader which has a trigger to open the door to drop salt, this requires you to open the door with the hand you use to crank the handle. As soon as you open the door, the salt begins dropping (before you're able to crank the handle) and it jams the spinning wheel. The same thing happens when you go to close the door. I definitely cannot recommend it.

Easy to use and spreads the ice melt widely without having to touch the stuff myself. A few pieces get stuck now and then, but nothing tapping on the side doesn't fix.

My Husband's last hand held spreader just conked out on him, so I took a chance with this one. Very, very happy with the results. It seems to be made more sturdy than the previous one we had, made by a different manufacturer. Spreads very evenly, without clogging up. My Husband is thrilled!!

I thought this salt spreader would be heavier duty then the basic Scott hand spreader I've used for years but it looks pretty much the same to me except for the color. It clogs with the granular magnesium chloride salt that I use. Might work OK with calcium chlroide flakes, but so does the seed spreader. but any clumps block it up. I end up using it as a bucket and throwing the salt by hand. I should just get a medium size bucket to save on trips filling this thing.

It is light duty and made of plastic. I found it at another lumber yard for half of the price after I ordered it. It did the job of spreading sand on an icey sidewalk and small drive . Shop around before you buy it.

Against the negative reviews, I bought this because I only use a bagged ice melting mix that doesn't have large granules in it. The spreader constantly jams with particles and was no better than the cheap-o ones at the home centers. If you only use calcium chloride beads, it might be OK, but then any hand spreader would work for those. Refilling the shaker jugs that some products come in is still the best and easiest way to cover a small to medium sized area. After that, you'll need to upgrade to a push spreader.

I bought this last season and used it for the first time this past winter. Love it. A much better option than a scooper I had been using. It distributes the salt nicely, evenly and w/o a mess on my gloves. After 10 years of living in the Midwest, I wish I had found this early.

This was a great buy. It does it's job well and the experience was a good one it arrived earlier than promised and it works great.

This works OK, but jams frequently. If you can tolerate that, you won't be too unhappy. It does a decent enough job so if your driveway is small (ours is wide enough for one car and can fit two cars front to back).

Would not distribute 'rock salt' type deicer at all. This summer it fell off the 5 gallon bucket I store the deicer in (only a little more than 12" off the floor!) and the handle broke off. Not repairable, totally useless.
