5.0 out of 5 stars Good little gizmo
Being plagued this Winter with frozen rain, compacted snow and melted snow that inconveniently freezes overnight and being that a conventional snow shovel will not move this stuff I sought a solution. Enter the Suncast SSD5500. This does a very nice job scraping up thin ice and compacted snow, it is fairly tough with a metal blade so you can bash it down on ice. It is...

1.0 out of 5 stars Plastic crap, it won't last
I bought this to chip ice and after the first day the hard plastic started chipping off in chunks and finally (within 1 storm time-period) was completely whittled down to just the pole. This won't last, invest in an a full-metal ice breaker.

It is however somewhat light so if you want to shift big lumps of ice it will take you some time, but for what it is it is great.

I live in Connecticut so I am no stranger to snow and ice. The first year we had our house I was using a shovel (like a spade shovel) to chip away the ice and that was a waste of time and energy (not to mention I did some damage to my driveway). My neighbor had one of these and after i was outside for an hour, I wound up borrowing his scraper and was done in about 15 minutes (redoing where I had already done). Another neighbor has one that is all metal and it gives more of a workout from the weight of the tool alone and really just seems like overkill.

So, yes this is plastic and light weight (with a metal blade). I have had mine for 3 seasons and it is well worth the investment. Mine is still fully intact and if it broke tomorrow, it would still be less then $6 per season and well worth it.
