4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Modern Gamelan, February 25, 2008
By
The Evergreen Club Gamelan is a very talented Canadian group only made better on this release by the talents of some legendary Indonesian players and composers. This is some very lively and vibrant Gamelan Degung; which is somewhere between the ponderous Central Javanese Gamelan and the manic speed of Balinese. Finally I want to note that this is one of the best recorded Gamelans that I've heard in recent memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars A soothing escape to a tropical paradise, March 12, 2005
This review is from: Sunda Song (Audio CD)
The title says it all. It is an experience of music from another culture which in my mind is associated with a tropical paradise which I imagine existed prior to Dutch colonialism of now present day Indonesia. The gamelan orchestra consists of various sizes of suspended metallophones (percussion instruments with tuned metal bars), small bulbed gongs, large suspended gongs, and drums. With the soft gentle percussive nature of the music, the experience that I get from it is an expression of the slower tranquilizing rhythms of nature. This album is well worth the $9.98 for anyone looking to explore other realms of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return trip to Bali, August 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sunda Song (Audio CD)
You'll feel like you're at a Balinese temple recital with this excellent CD Sunda Song.

I heard Arang Arang on ABC Classic FM and was instantly entranced by it's slightly discordant rhythm, and tracked down the piece - and CD - online.

I've listened to it now more than a dozen times and it's just perfection, bringing back many memories of a wonderful stay in Ubud when I was a University student. It's sure to rekindle your love of Bali and Balinese culture! Enjoy!
