I love the idea of this hat, but it took me a while to figure out the difference between the Infant vs Baby vs Child vs Youth sizes. Here is what I have learned:

Infant - does NOT have the mesh on the sides or the sizing adjuster on the back (it does have a break-away strap) - 18-20" (PLEASE SEE 9/14 UPDATE BELOW)
Baby - does NOT have the mesh on the sides or the sizing adjuster on the back (it does have a break-away strap) - 19.5-21.5" (PLEASE SEE 9/14 UPDATE BELOW)
Child - does have the mesh on the sides and sizing adjuster on the back (some colors have a break-away strap) - 20-22"
Youth - does have the mesh on the sides and sizing adjuster on the back (does not have a break-away strap) - 21-23"

I have 18 month old twins. I have read from other posts that the infant and baby sizes are too big. Therefore even though the Child size is supposed to be for 2-5 years, I bought the Child size. When I adjust the Child hat to make it as small as possible, it is 19.5". Given the sizes of the Infant and Baby hats - 19.5 works! I want to be able to adjust the hat, and the 2 inch margin is just too large on the Infant/Baby hats without the adjustment!

I used these hats on a 2 week vacation at the beach. My kids will fight any hat. When I first put them on, they fight me, but then they forget they are wearing it. I was worried that the break-away strap would be too 'flimsy' but it wasn't. It stayed secure when the kids tried to pull their hat off. Just like the kids initially fight the hat, they also fight sunscreen. And I really appreciated that they didn't get their face/head/neck burnt at all during that 2 week period - even when the kids 'won' and weren't wearing sunscreen.

Now, having said all that - I received a 'defective' hat.

I was hesitant to spend the money on two of these hats, but I couldn't be more pleased with them. My kids wear these hats whenever we are in the sun for more than 15 minutes or so. They wear them hiking, at the pool, fishing, playing at the park, at the river, and just playing in the front yard. The foam in the front of the brim keeps the front of the hat standing out to provide perfect shade for their faces. The back fabric is not lined, so it lays easily across their necks and shoulders. The mesh panels keep them cool, and when the hats get wet they dry very quickly. With their hats and their rashguard swimsuits, I only have to put sunscreen on their hands and feet, and a swipe across their nose and cheeks, if we are going to be in the sun for a long time. They don't get sunburned when they wear their hats... ever. Between the hats and the swimsuits, I can't honestly remember the last time my kids got sunburned.

The bright colors and large brims also make it easy to spot my kids in a group!

My girls have been wearing these hats for the past two years. The fabric is extremely durable, despite how lightweight it is. The hats are both in excellent shape, and the kids show no signs of growing out of them anytime soon. The pull strap across the back makes these hats adjustable for a wide range of ages/sizes. I did put a snap on my younger daughters strap. She's old enough to unsnap it if she got tangled in something, and the velcro tab was not sufficient to keep her hat on.

One warning - these hats can be rolled for packing, but DO NOT fold the brim where the foam is. You will crease the foam permanently. As long as you roll it, it will bounce back into shape easily.

All in all, these are excellent hats. I recommend them to all my friends and acquaintences.

We got Size - Youth (5+), Color - Cream.

It arrived on time.

It fits really well, and it's light, seems having good coverage.

But the color we got is cream, it looks more like sand or tan.

By the way, the price on Amazon or the seller on Amazon "the Portable Baby" is not competitive at all. I checked the manufacturer website after I received the order from Amazon, it is $19.95 on SundayAfternoons website Vs. $24-$30 sold from Amazon.

The size I ordered was "baby", listed as "6 to 24 months". My baby is six months old and has a HUGE head for his age, so I figured this would be the right size. Nope, it's way too big for him.
After doing more digging on the Sun Day Afternoons website, I found the actual sizes in inches - and they're way, way off. Their 6-24 month hat (the one I bought) fits head sizes 19.8-21.8 inches. According to the standard growth chart you can get from any pediatrician, the average kid at 24 months is just over 19 inches, i.e. 2 year olds heads are usually too small for their 6-24 month hat. Same with their "infant" size. For 0-12 months, the hat is 18-20 inches, but average sized baby heads don't get to 18 inches until they're almost a year old.
Net/net: If you're getting this hat for a baby/toddler, order on the SMALL side.

My son does not really like to wear hats. He kept this one on the entire time at the beach (2 hours). He's 3.

The adjustable band is fantastic for snugly fitting it to his forehead. The chin strap was a nice feature & since he loves Max & Ruby and the episode where Max wears a rain hat with a chin strap, he was open to having it fitted under his chin. I can see how other children might not like this so much - but the band will keep it on in a stiff breeze.

The vented top was great - his head didn't get nearly as sweaty as I would have expected.

The brim covered his entire face & the back covered all of the back of his neck & upper shoulders from the sun.

It's very light weight, the darker underside definitely helped with reducing reflected light.

5 day cruise & my fair fair fair son hardly looks like he's been in the sun at all. :)
