Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—Blabey offers a charming glimpse of childhood resilience and ambivalence through his title character. Sunday, all glasses and funny hat, shares her story in a matter-of-fact tone: her father moves around a lot for his job, and she is always the new girl. She both appreciates and regrets her circumstances, presented as a series of snapshots in "good news, bad news" juxtaposition. ("I've lived all over the world. Which is great. Trouble is, I'm always starting at new schools…. And everyone thinks the new kid is weird. But guess what? I don't care.") She goes on to describe herself and her feelings in one or two sentences per page. The simple narrative is fleshed out by the acrylic and mixed-media illustrations in muted earth tones and soft edges showing that Sunday, a thin grin bisecting her round face, gets along just fine, even while she is wishing for more stability. Match this picture book with Amy Krouse Rosenthal's OK Book (HarperCollins, 2007) to introduce children to the satisfaction of independence and self-reliance.—Lisa Egly Lehmuller, St. Patrick's Catholic School, Charlotte, NC END

Review

An energetic, frizzy-haired girl claims her quirkiness but wrestles with her family's frequent moves...[Blabey's] clear acrylics and mixed media ground Sunday's excitements and worries- shown in extreme, sometimes manic, facial expressions - on soft, solid, comforting backgrounds. --Kirkus Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from www.firrkids.com, August 21, 2009
This review is from: Sunday Chutney (Hardcover)
One of the first things you'll notice about Sunday Chutney is her slightly unusual name. The second thing you'll notice is her broad, sunny smile. Sunday admits she's a bit off the beaten path, but she's happiest that way.

Because of her dad's job, Sunday Chutney has lived all over the world. She's quite accustomed to being new in school. So everyone thinks the new girl is weird - who cares? Sunday enjoys her own company and has learned to create her own fun. She has a vivid imagination and tons of interests.

Among others, Sunday loves big breakfasts with her parents, drum solos, marine biology and sticking up for a good cause. She does not love grumpy people, creamed corn (eh, can't blame her there) or bullies. Even though Sunday really enjoys making new friends and finds traveling to be wonderfully glamorous, she does sometimes wish her family would settle down and stay in one town. But she has big dreams and a great big imagination to rely on until that happens!

It's very enjoyable to read a book centered around a female character with a lot of self confidence. Sunday wears glasses, enjoys athletics and never tries to downplay her intelligence. She has loads of interests and doesn't seem to care what people think of her. Sunday Chutney is being her own person and having a great time doing it. Consequently, this is an awesome book for helping children appreciate their own talents and gifts. Fun and interesting people stand up for what they like, even if that means they stand out from the crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, December 24, 2009
This review is from: Sunday Chutney (Hardcover)
this is a fun book about a girl who's always the new girl. her parents are always moving from place to place so she's been all over the world and has seen many things.. but as a result she doesn't have any friends and is always 'the new girl' in school. despite this however, sunday has a really bright outlook on life. right after she says something depressing she bouces back with something funny or quirky. she has an amazing imagination and is not afraid to use it. for most of the book her imagination seems to make up for her lack of friends, but at the end she says that making friends is something she's good at and shows her with a group of girls.

this is a good book to give a kid who moves around alot or one moving once to a new place. it voices the fears kids have in these situations, but is fun enough to almost side-step the unpleasant feelings associated with moving. she has a lot of interests and is really up beat. a fun book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A First Class World Traveler, June 15, 2010
By
This review is from: Sunday Chutney (Hardcover)
"Sunday Chutney", by Aaron Blabey, is a real gem. Sunday has an unusual name but she also has an unusual life. Her father moves all over the world for his job and the family goes with him. The good news is that Sunday gets to see the world but the bad news is that she is always starting at new schools.

The wonderful thing about this book is that Sunday is very flexible, confident and independent. She takes the good with the bad. She is usually very good at making friends but she admits that she is sometimes lonely. She usually finds travel to be wonderfully glamorous but sometimes she wishes her family would always have the same house.

Sunday is a good role model for children who are dealing with change. She makes the best of each new situation and puts on a happy face.
