Book Description

November 1995
Ever wonder who is going to eat all that wheat down in the basement? Ever wonder if bearing one another's burdens really includes lugging a new move-in's piano up three flights of stairs? Ever think it might be fun to be the Angel of Death? Ever wonder how to tell if your fishing buddy has been called as your new bishop? Ever think there isn't much "church" about Church basketball? Ever wonder if enduring to the end really means sitting through another talk by a stake high counselor? Ever think that the Super Bowl might be more reverent than the average sacrament meeting? Brother Kirby does in this great collection of Mormon humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious insight into the Mormon culture!, January 11, 1999
By
This review is from: Sunday of the Living Dead (Paperback)
This book is worth the 4-6 week wait and triple it's Amazon.com price. If you are Mormon, and even if you're not, this book is absolutely side-splitting. Kirby has an eagle eye for the foibles of his religion, and cheerfully exaggerates them to turn his normal Utah Mormon ward into a funny world. His observations of the mundane Mormon functions had me falling out of the chair with laughter. It's a good thing I wasn't reading it during sacrament meeting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Right On Target, July 23, 2002

For anyone who grew up LDS/Mormon (as I did), and/or for anyone familiar with Mormonism as an adult, this book (assuming the reader possesses a sense of humor and is not overly defensive) is a pure, cover-to-cover hoot. The cartoon drawings are as funny as the captions.

One example: Two Mormon congregations, one in Utah, the other in Bolivia, are shown during a religious service. The congregations differ only in clothing, the Utahans in typical USA Sunday best, the Bolivians in indigenous native attire. The men, women and children in both congregations are otherwise identical in ages, sizes, pew locations, body positions and facial expressions, all sound asleep with heads drooped to the side and mouths hanging open. The caption reads, "The gospel is the same everywhere," a statement very often proudly stated in Mormon meetings.

I think it was Oscar Wilde who said, "If you're going to tell people the truth, you'd better make them laugh or they will kill you." This book is a cleverly illustrated look at comically stated truths. I laughed out loud at most of these cartoons.
