Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1. An African-American family of four sleeps late, eats breakfast together, and reads before going to church, where Grandpa and Grandma join them. After the service is over, they all take the subway to Grandpa and Grandma's for dinner, stories, and enjoying photo albums. This simple story is told in less than 70 words with just a few large-type words per page. Bold, intensely colored acrylic illustrations on canvas depict the characters in clean, stark settings; all of the figures are faceless, lending an "everyperson" look to the narrative. The art and events capture traditional cultural images of African-American family life in a format appropriate for young listeners and beginning readers.?Barbara Osborne Williams, Queens Public Library, Jamaica, NY

From Booklist

Ages 3^-6. A pair of African American sisters and their parents rise late on Sunday morning, eat breakfast, walk to church, and subsequently take the subway to their grandparents' home for stories, memories, and supper. This is not so much a story as a glimpse of a family outing, and the final line summarizes, "Sunday is for family." The CIP indicates that the girls are twins, but that's not clear from the illustrations, as no figures have faces. Children will be able to spot the sister in pink and the one in yellow, but only the clothes and hair shape indicate particular members of the family. The very short simple text is directed toward the young preschooler, but the vibrant acrylic illustrations, though handsome, require a sophisticated eye. Children will see moments here with which they can identify. Linda Perkins
