Two Delightful Murders,

If you are looking for an atypical mystery, this is the one for you. Much like the equally superb "Enigma by the Sea", this is a breezy visit into the lives of an assortment of interesting, odd and very funny people, with the mystery/murders taking a back seat to characters and dialog. The physical details and setting are also major players, but more than anything else it's the writing that makes this one such a joy to read. There's a penetrating gaze at work here, with a talent for skewering the absurd and hilarious aspects of human nature in all its variety. The Italians of every class are the targets, yes, but much of their hubris is universal. Much of the credit should also go to the deft, light hearted translation by William Weaver: You can tell he enjoyed it, too. A parking ticketeer is described as "... a mean, fussy, treacherous ghost." A troublesome lover is "Trembling with the desire to quarrel." On Henry James: "...one of those writers you have to push uphill, like a bicycle." This was a best seller in Europe but remains unjustly obscure here in the US.
