Book Description

April 15, 2007

A famously crazed presence in the hot rod movement of the 1950s, rediscovered in the 1980s when ’50s nostalgia swept pop culture, Kenneth “Von Dutch” Howard spent more than a decade essentially missing-in-action from the scene he’d helped to create and define. It was during that time—on four consecutive Sundays in 1970—that Richard Karl Koch visited Von Dutch in his Calabasas, California, home to photograph the father of modern pinstriping and soul of the hot rod movement for a cover story for the Los Angeles Times’ Sunday supplement, West magazine. Koch’s candid and colorful photographs from those shoots, the vast majority published here for the first time, provide a window on Von Dutch’s missing years.

Here we see the enigmatic icon in his many guises, from cantankerous genius to freewheeling goof, machining handgun parts in his famous workshop/bus, casually clowning with vehicles left at his home by his friend Steve McQueen (including the car Von Dutch built for McQueen’s 1969 film, The Reivers), and working at the pinstriping that sealed his fame. Accompanied by captions that bring to light further facets of this period of Von Dutch’s life and career, these photographs illustrate a little-known and largely fascinating chapter of hot rod history.

Book Description

Over 150 photographs, most published here for the first time, give us a rare and candid look at a little-known but no-less creative period in the life of Kenneth “Von Dutch” Howard, the father of modern pinstriping and the oft-cited soul of the hot rod movement. Drawn from four photo shoots in 1970, the colorful pictures capture the enigmatic icon working and playing, pinstriping hot rods and clowning with vehicles—including the one he built for Steve McQueen’s film, The Reivers—and provide a little-known and largely fascinating chapter of hot rod history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explaining the myths behind the man, October 7, 2008
This review is from: Sundays with Von Dutch (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book from many points of view. The artwork created by Von Dutch is second to none. He was a bit of a mystery, and much research has been put into this book to try and explain the gaps in his history. I also admired the low keyness of Von Dutch when he was creating his masterful pinstriping and other creative overhauls.

The way in which the book came about is equally as interesting with a series of Sundays put aside for the author to spend with the man who had become more of an enigma by this stage in his life. Fascinating reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, but few photographs of Von Dutch's work, August 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sundays with Von Dutch (Paperback)
I liked this book and recommend it, but I recommend it for the writing, and a glimps into a small segment of Von Dutch's life. If you are purchasing this book to see examples of his work, you will be disappointed. There are more photographs of him and the guns he created than pinstriping or painting. This book, like other books I have read about Ed Roth and the sixties car culture in general, are lacking in photographs of the actual work. I suspect that this is because much of the work was never photographed, and much of the actual work no longer exists. If you want to see a lot of photographs of the man himself, this is the book for you. If you want to read about Von Dutch during a short period of his life, then buy this book. If you are only interested in seeing his work, take a pass on this book; but it is doubtful that you will find any book loaded with photographs of his work.

This is a must have for any fan of Von Dutch. A candid look inside the life of Ken Howard in 1970. Great photos of the legend at home doing what he did best along with alot of interesting info. Packed with tons of excellent up close full color photos that have probably not been seen before this book. Check it out!
