The Sunfishes by Jack Ellis,
By
This review is from: The Sunfishes (Paperback)
This is an excellent book! Jack puts sunfish in the same category as spooky trout or bonefish. He doesn't take the usual approach of how easy it is to catch them but, rather how to stalk the BIG sunfish using flies resembling what they actually eat-wasps, pupa, etc. Jack's writing always challenges the usual, well-worn approaches and gives serious, interesting alternatives. The information here can be applied to anywhere there are sunfish and big ones! Read it several times, it's worth it.

This is an excellent book if you are interested in fly fishing for bluegill, shell crackers, and other sunfish. Ellis gives a lot of pertinent info. on behavior and location. The one drawback of this 2nd edition is a lack of adequate illustrations and photos which could boost this book to 5 stars. It is a book worth underlining as you read and re-read.

This review is from: The Sunfishes (Paperback)
This book should only be read by flyfishers who live in the south because it is to narrowly focused on that part of the country.Flyfishers who live farther north should buy a book with a broader scope.

A Good Book with quite a few irritating parts.,

This review is from: The Sunfishes (Paperback)
Being from Texas, I can appreciate how Dixie-centric this book is, but some of the beliefs (such as Bluegill from northern states being smaller due to colder weather) are demonstratably false. Now that I have beat the book down.... There is alot in here that is useful. His pointers on fishing are very good, and how he lays out strategy on each type of water would be useful to any angler . I also think he did a good job with the what he believes should be in a Bream man's tackle box. I would recommend this book to anyone, as its short commings are not too offensive and the meat of the information is very good. The biggest flaw inhibiting the enjoyment of the reading is that, like the majority of fly fishing literature, the author foists upon himself the mantle of Norman Maclean.

This book was a find and a surprise. It is focused on catching bluegills in East Texas, so it a must for Texas fly fishermen. But the information can be used all over North America. Jack Ellis ties in personal stories and anecdotes with abundant information about catching sunfish. Highly recommended for all fly fishermen who enjoy fishing for sunfishes.
