An Oscar nominee for Best Score (Henry Mancini), SUNFLOWER is a grandly emotional melodrama featuring a stunning performance from Sophia Loren. In another of the actress's great collaborations with director Vittorio De Sica (THE BICYCLE THIEF), Loren plays Giovanna, a steel-willed Italian woman on a desperate search to find her husband Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni), who has gone missing on the WWII battlefields of Russia. Making the grueling overland journey years after the end of the war, she tracks Antonio down and finds him a changed man. This heart-wrenching reunion will forever alter the course of their lives.

This is one of the fifteen or so films that have stayed in my mind throughout my life. I first saw the film more than thirty years ago. The acting and plot may be banal. When seen today, the film is distinctly old-fashioned in technique and treatment. However, the film still touches a chord: it deals with a forgotten group of people (Italians captured during WW2), it deals with a wife who believes her lost husband to be still alive, it deals with a situation in which the impersonal forces of history come face-to-face with the reality of individual human beings. The film is an enduring classic, and Sophia Loren's superb Italian humanity still gives the film an everlasting appeal.

One of the best performance of these two actors. It's a well made story of lives that intersect and then separate, to reunite briefly and find out that people have grown into different beings after some years. the story itself is a detail, the character development is the true center of the movie.

There are very few movies that I would give a rating of 5 stars. This is worth the five stars. One of my favorite foreign movies with two of my favorite actors and one my favorite Italian directors. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni give their usual commanding performances. Outstanding. Just as good as "Two Women". In addition, the music was worthy of the Oscar. Definitely a keeper for your movie library.

Love Sophia and Marcello. Henry Mancini's score is wonderful. This movie has stayed with me ever since I first saw it in the theater ages ago. Couldn't wait for the movie to come out on DVD but better yet I was able to get it on my Kindle so I can watch it anytime.

Does not measure up to Van Gogh,s. Subscript's never reveal the true depth of feelings. Makes picture a jumble of photos.

I love this story of romance, the war and lost love. Sophia Loren is a very great actress and in this movie she lived up to it. This movie kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Sophia Loren looks everywhere for her husband. I felt like I was looking with her for her husband. Great Movie only downside were the subtitles because of the language barrier.

Well, the improbabilities are improbable. How can we believe she could have found her way to the right spot in Russia? But the emotional intensity is fully believable -- young lovers in the height of passion, the complexity of feelings in a man who awoke from the horror of war in the Russian winter to tender ministrations of the woman who saved his life, and shock of recognition and sense of betrayal in a woman who has found her love is alive after an impossibly difficult search. Just the closeup of Sophia Loren's face as her character sees her long lost husband descend from the train to be greeted by his Russian wife is enough to distinguish the film as a great piece of story-telling. Maybe not the best of the Loren-Mastroianni matchups, but then not all fine diamonds are the Kohinoor.

Loren portrays a woman who is driven and very sure of herself, despite all evidence to the contrary. What amazed me was how real it was. Sometimes, our best plans are not realized, and we must just accept what we are handed (by God). You may not like the outcome, but it was a very real picture. Like sunflowers, God's love shines on the good and bad alike.
