I've been listening to Robin Guthrie's work a lot in the last year or so and have collected, I think, all his solo work. This is a very nice set of 4 songs, consistent with the quality of work his admirers have come to expect. Beautiful CD packaging. That said, I wish I had downloaded the $4 mp3 version and skipped the $12 CD. It runs just over 16 minutes.

Robin Guthrie has always been one my all time favorite guitar players. I have followed him with the beloved Cocteau Twins throughout their entire career, his guest apperances on albums, his soundtrack work and albums with Harold Budd, Violet Indiana, and now his awesome solo career. Bordering on otherworldly, ethereal, soundscaping, some might say ambient as well, this guy never fails to impress me with his unique layers of guitar goodness. His sound is unmistakeable, that reverb that just never seems to decay, that signature creamy guitar sound that leaves you wondering..............what does his effect arsenal look like? Being a guitar player myself, I would love to pick his brain about his gear set-up. That being said, this new EP Sunflower Stories blows me away. Again. If you like ambient guitar based music or are into post-rock instrumental music, or are a big fan of Cocteau Twins, etc. this is an added addition to your collection. As well as the music being gorgeous once again, the art work is amazing on this release. I love how much time Robin puts into constructing his songs, as well as the complimentary artwork that he presents with each release. Robin, if you're listening.....thank you for the wonderful gift you are sharing. For those of you who are thinking about buying his music, just do it. You won't be let down.

I will always buy music by certain artists, it doesn't matter if I don't like it more or less than another album; I do it for my music library. Artists go through phases and I like that. Now, Robin Guthrie... I buy all of his music because It helps me feel Cocteau Twins still exist. Also it sounds like I'm in Hawaii :)

I've been a Cocteau Twins fan for many years, and I've recently started to make a Cocteau Twins mp3 CD. I've just come across Robin Guthrie's (of Cocteau) solo work, including this stellar album. I'm very impressed by his own work, especially the albums, Carousel, Angel Falls, and Sunflower Stories. I was going to put his songs on my Cocteau CD, but I've decided to add them onto a separate Robin Guthrie mp3 CD collection for my and others' enjoyment. He deserves his own CD for sure.
After reading biographies about Robin's and Liz's (of Cocteau) breakup around the time of Cocteau making the Four Calendar Cafe album, I understand why I wasn't too drawn to Cocteau's Milk & Kisses album. There was a passion and spark missing there, probably because of discord following the breakup. At any rate, I'm glad Robin is at it again, with a renewed passion that I've been hoping to hear from him again one day. Excellent work, man! |
