4.0 out of 5 stars Works well... But.
I recently bought this converter to run a solid state cooler. When I first plugged it in, everything worked fine. When we got to our destination, it would not work. I discovered that you need to plug in the AC cord first and then plug in the device you wish to power with it. Apparently the circuit does not like having a load on it when it first powers up...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead on Arrival (DOA)
I purchased this unit to power the Koolatron Compact Kooler, which uses 4.5 amps. I figured since this adapter is rated at 5.8 amps there should be no problem. Well there was a problem. I got no juice from the adapter at all. At first I thought it was an issue with the cooler, but I quickly ruled that out when I was able to get the cooler running while plugged into a 12V...

I purchased this unit to power the Koolatron Compact Kooler, which uses 4.5 amps. I figured since this adapter is rated at 5.8 amps there should be no problem. Well there was a problem. I got no juice from the adapter at all. At first I thought it was an issue with the cooler, but I quickly ruled that out when I was able to get the cooler running while plugged into a 12V outlet in my car.

I then thought that maybe the amp rating of 5.8 was exaggerated, so I tried plugging in a standard car phone charger, which also did not work with the adapter. My conclusion ... the adapter is a dud. It seems like after reading some other reviews here, the amp rating of 5.8 may indeed be exaggerated, so I decided to go with another product (5 Amp AC to 12V DC Power Adapter).

*** UPDATE ***
The 5 Amp AC to 12V DC Power Adapter worked great right out of the box. My first impression was that it was definitely much heavier than the Sunforce 55520 and it seemed to cool the fridge effortlessly. If you need an AC/DC Power Converter that will power a device upto 5 amps, skip the Sunforce and go with the 5 Amp AC to 12V DC Power Adapter. You won't regret the decision.

I bought this to use with a Coleman Inflate-All Quick Pump so I could inflate bike tires and other things without having to be near a car. It did not produce enough power to even budge the pump, even though the manufacturer claims it will work with a pump or compressor.

Make sure the seller will pay for return postage if you buy this. (Northern Tool & Equipment didn't.)

The good:
The converter seems to have no problem powering a cooler.
It runs relatively cool but make sure you leave room for all the ventilation slots to breathe.

The bad:
You really need to plug in the AC cord first. The little instruction sheet that came with it said nothing about this.
If I had designed this converter, I would have included some indicator LEDs to let you know the unit is working or why it's not working.

I would buy this product again and would recommend it to others for powering 12 VDC items that draw less than the specified output current.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, June 24, 2008

I purchased the AC/DC power converter for my 40" Coleman Cooler and at first I thought it didn't work because there's something like metal that shakes in it, but I think that is supposed to happened. At any rate, the converter kept my cooler hot and cool for 3 days of traveling. I enjoyed having the option to switch from cold to hot. Great product!

I bought this adapter so that I could use my portable air compressor in my house. It does not work with my compressor. It is useless to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mine didn't work, February 4, 2009
This review is from: Sunforce AC/DC Power Converter (Automotive)
I ordered this converter and the first one I received didn't work. I have another converter that runs my DC appliances just fine so I know it wasn't my appliances. I returned it and requested a replacement. The replacement didn't work either. I would order a different brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed, April 19, 2009
This review is from: Sunforce AC/DC Power Converter (Automotive)
Amazon recommended this product for an air compressor that I was buying. It didn't work for the compressor. It would work for a lower amp'd item, but that was not why I bought it. So buyer beware of what you need this for.

I left an AC adaptor for a car cooler in a Holiday Inn. I tried to buy a replacement, but Brookstone was no help. This adaptor was the perfect answer!

I purchased this unit to power an older 'Executive' cooler (no longer made) rated at 12V 5 amp. It powered up the first try and after running 12 hours it was barely warm, and the cooler was still working fine. It's lightweight and has a decently long cord. No disappointment here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product!, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Sunforce AC/DC Power Converter (Automotive)
We purchased this converter to use with a hot/cold cooler that we use in our van. We had the van plug but didn't have one for the house. We ordered another one prior to this which wasn't powerful enough to turn the cooler on. This one works perfectly! Yeah!
