This review is from: Sungbird (After Albeniz) (Audio CD)
Splendidly gifted young pianist Helen Sung leads us into this unusual recording with perfect versions of two pieces by Isaac Albeniz from his Espana Op. 165, following it with a composition of her own in a similar vein. The transition to Jazz comes naturally and inevitably with the next track, Ms. Sung's own "Shall We Tango?" From there on, she and saxophonist Marcus Strickland, bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Nasheet Waits, and percussionist Samuel Torres offer compelling versions of these two very compatible world musics.Helen Sung's playing is precise and swinging, passionate and hip, full of graceful variations in which, to quote Proust, "caprice is blended with virtuosity." Very highly recommended.
