5.0 out of 5 stars Best Vamp Book Ever
I have never been the type who went for reading the adventures of werewolves & vampires, etc., but Nancy Collins Sonya Blue series was able to persuade me otherwise. 3.0 out of 5 stars Slow Start; Confusing Prose
The book starts in an asylum where "Blue, S." is the newest addition to the Danger Ward. Her interior monolog is awkwardly written; the segues into the life of an orderly and the antics of a female tele-evangelist seem more like poorly written subplots than actual narrative elements. Finally, around page 116, Sonja Blue breaks out of her institutional prison, and the pace...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Vamp Book Ever, July 26, 2000
This review is from: Sunglasses After Dark (Paperback)
I have never been the type who went for reading the adventures of werewolves & vampires, etc., but Nancy Collins Sonya Blue series was able to persuade me otherwise. I first read Sunglasses in college and found that not only did I like it, but could not put the book down. Sonya Blue is definitely nothing like that OTHER well known vampire writer's protagonist, LeWuss, I mean, well, you know who I mean...Sonya Blue is unlike any vampire you'll ever read about. In the first installment, we are introduced to a badass Sonya, and Nancy Collins has a way of making the reader care about this badass. Not only is the story compelling, but if you read the subsequent Sonya Blue books, you'll see that the character development meets and exceeds all expectations. I have read all four novels in the Sonya Blue collection and simply cannot say enough positive things about the series. My favorite book happens to be In the Blood, but the reader would be doing a great disservice to himself not to read the other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic to keep in the library, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
Although the synopsis as written here is actually the plot line to Nancy A. Collins' book "Wild Blood", "Sunglasses After Dark" is one the best vampire novels I've ever read. Sonja Blue is a very complex and sympathic character in the same manner as LeStat and like the early Anne Rice vampire novels, you find yourself getting mental impressions from the detailed story lines long after reading the book. This is definitely one to keep and read 2 or 3 times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue gets [mistreated], May 26, 2002
This review is from: Sunglasses After Dark (Paperback)
How this series remains so widely ignored is beyond me. Perhaps Sonja Blue gets [mistreated] by other books because it predates more current popular series. Start reading it, start loving it. Stop wasting time on newer stuff until you have read this. Love the complexity and originality of her writing. Her charater is three-dimensional, not just colorful adjectives on paper. There is a practicality you will find shared between Nancy's A. Collins' Sonja Blue and Laurell K. Hamiltons' Anita Blake that is refreshing. Although the characters share the job description of vampire hunter, they are very different - one being a vampire and one being human - they each lend a new perspective on the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Fantasy at it's best!, June 25, 1998
By A Customer
Sonja Blue is without a doubt one of the best Vampires in literature today. The story is a masterful work that captures the reader and drags his down into the "Other's" dark realm where nothing is what it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars LESTAT, TAKE A NUMBER!, April 14, 1998

This is how vampires should be written. This is a pager turner bar none. If any one disagrees write to me. This is the freaky book and I love it! Where's the film?

5.0 out of 5 stars I heard someone ask where the film is...., September 14, 2000

This book rocks. period. and about the film, bud, if you actually READ the book, you know that with today's cencorship problems, there is no way the film would be released in the US. on to the review! let me just say that if you love vampires, are strong of stomach, and don't get offended too easily, READ THIS BOOK! Our main character is Sonja Blue, a renegade vampire, vampire slayer, owner of Renfeilds, and prostitute (sometimes). This book was really graphic, as were the illustrations sometimes. but i must say that to this day it is my favorite book, a close second being The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell, by Marilyn Manson, but that's another story. The story aside, this book is extremely realistic, and doesn't balance it's weight on iffy situations. Sonja's extreme suberbness, wasn't just a fluke, as so many movies are clicheing so much, she was a mess up, the byproduct of her creator's uncarefulness. My friend showed me this book, and since then i have gotten two more people into Sonja Blue, and i hope i can get you in too. Beautiful book, stunning story, vampiric vixen, what more could a guy ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars unVampire who cares, January 11, 2001

This book will take you places.

Into the heart of a child of darkness. Into the dark world of sanitariums and doctors who take graft. You'll meet millionaires and spoiled rich kids; and you'll meet monsters.

In some way, Nancy Collins will make you care about all of them.

Their mistakes, their stubborness, and the compassion they do and don't have. You'll meet teachers, mentors, villains, and seamy associates. You'll meet charismatic evil.

A book that explodes the "safe world" of everyday life with characters that Bram Stoker would never have believed.

Essential reading to those who have an interest in the Children of the Night.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gothic Masterpiece, July 6, 2001

This review is from: Sunglasses After Dark (Paperback)
"Sunglasses After Dark" is a book that haunts you days after you finish it. Nancy Collins masterfully takes us into a dark and violent world where things are never what they seem. After reading Anne Rice's books I thought that no one could come even close to her originality when talking about vampires, but this book proved me wrong. It pulls no punches and spares no graphic details. I love that in an author and in a book. Read this book. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different, September 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sunglasses After Dark (Hardcover)
It is dark and definetly not your typical vampire novel. I was confused a little here and there but overall I understood everything....I think. It's what you would think a vampire would be like if they were real. Not all pretty and sociable. A good read. Will read the next Sonja Blue book. By the way this author was on Charlaine Harris's web page of author she likes. That's why I tried it to begin with.

Another nice take on the vampire mythos. Unlike others, I do not tire of a well written vampire novel. The pop culture vampire books are the ones that make me cringe (we all know what ones they are). This had violence, gore, intrigue, passion and all the other things that make a vamp book worth reading. I look forward to reading more of Collins' work.
