Grade 5 Up-The techniques and discoveries of underwater archaeology are introduced in this book that updates Elisha Linder and Avner Raban's Introducing Underwater Archaeology (Lerner, 1976; o.p.). Broader in scope than W. John Hackwell's Diving to the Past (Scribners, 1988), it provides a general overview of how archaeologists work to bring to light and interpret aspects of ancient trade, commerce, and history. Key concepts are introduced in bold and defined in the glossary, and one-or two-page inserts expand upon a point made in the text. Unique changes that occur underwater, such as the flattening of ships' hulls and encrustation of their bells, are explained in the easy-to-understand text. The illustrations, a combination of photographs, drawings, and diagrams in both black and white and full color, bring the methods and the history to life.
