I was using the Stamina SpaceMate stepper regularly for six years before it became just about unusable (cracked metal, clunking sound, pieces falling off). I immediately went online to order another one and saw this Sunny Climber Stepper for around the same price (costs a bit more). I did a search and every review I read was positive, so with some reservations (I don't like change), I ordered it. The stepper arrived quickly and took about 10 minutes for my husband to put together. It's pretty much one piece; you only have to attach the handlebars and one end of the pistons to the main unit (the other ends are already attached). I put the included batteries into the counter/timer and slid it onto the top pole. Tools, bolts and washers are all included. I agree with the other reviewer who said it looks better than the SpaceMate....it looks a lot sleeker. I used it for the first time this morning and here are my impressions. It's very quiet and smooth, a definite plus. Since it's a climber stepper, the step you take is deeper which took me about five minutes to get used to. At first, I wasn't stepping deep enough, so the counter kept turning off because it wasn't registering. Once I started taking deeper steps, the counter was fine. I put it on the easiest tension (there are 12!) which I found to be harder than the easiest tension on the SpaceMate. Because the step depth is deeper and the tension harder, I was moving slower and taking less steps per minute then with the SpaceMate, but the depth and tension made it more challenging. I thought I would run out of energy sooner, but I was able to do the full 30 minutes with no problems. It got my heart rate up which is my goal.Read more ›

I was toggling between buying a spinning bike or a stepper to strengthen my low body muscle. I was very happy to have purchased this climbing stepper by chance. It did not even appear in Sunny's website.

Pros:
easy assembly.
adjustable resistance.
smaller and cheaper than a spinning bike.
lower stepping frequency than spinning bikes mean lower joint abrasions.
longer stepping range than ordinary stepper means you burn more calories for the same movements.
need not lean your body forward like riding a spinning bike to hurt your back.
it burns more calories to keep you moving than spinning because you don't have the help of inertia on the flywheel.

Cons: you might need to adjust your posture to avoid your knees from hitting the the resistance cylinders occasionally.

I have a Stamina SpaceMate stepper which I use in the basement. It's pretty good and I am very happy with it, so when I decided to get another stepper for the family room (where my wife wanted to use it), I decided to buy the Sunny Climbing Stepper just for some variety. They are both about the same price - under $120. The Sunny beats the Stamina hands down. It feels better, looks better and is definitely a better machine. This is a small investment for a great workout. It's very solid and stable. I am 6' 1" and it works well for me and also works well for my wife who is 5' 7". When you like it you use it, and we are both getting great use out of it. I use a heart monitor when I'm on the stepper, and you can take it slow or get your heart as high as you like. If you're looking for a low-cost stepper, don't hesitate on this one.

I got this just over one week ago after much research. Years ago I used to walk 3-4 miles per day with a backpack on, and I had great tone in my legs, butt, and stomach. That was when I was a student. Now that I have a job, I've spent years sitting in a car and commuting 2 hours a day, so there goes my exercise, and my muscle tone! I still try to walk for a 1/2 hour 3-4 times per week, but it's not the same.

I ordered this stepper because it was a "climber" stepper, which means taking higher steps which is more work for my butt, legs, and stomach. Boy is it ever! The first night I assembled it (very easy to do) and tried it out, I was completely out of breath in less than a minute! I adjusted the tension to somewhere in the middle that was comfortable, and decided that I would use it a few times every night until I get totally out of breath in order to build up my stamina. It has a little digital meter on it that tells you how much time you've worked out, how many steps taken, and how many calories burned. I have only been using this for a few minutes each night, for a total of 34 minutes in the first week of owning it, and already my calves are showing more definition, my stomach and butt is firmer, and I look and feel better! It's amazing! I can't wait to see how I look and feel in a few more weeks! I can't stand the gym, but this thing is actually kind of fun to use while watching TV. It's great! It's also pretty compact and fits well into my tiny apartment living room.

I bought this stepper with modest expectations. For about $100, I anticipated getting a solid, no frills workout a few times a week. My first impression was positive. When I opened the box I was pleased to find the stepper needed very little assembly and would take up very little space. It also seemed sturdy and easy to move around.

The pedals are angled down toward the front at about a 45 degree angle. They have a textured surface and slightly raised edges to help your feet stay put.

While setting it up I discovered that four washers shown in the instruction manual were absent. They should have been screwed into the handlebar like the other pieces were so they couldn't have been lost in shipping. Also, the locking pin for the folding function doesn't really fit because the holes in the frame don't line up properly.

There's no way to gauge whether you have the tension dials on each side even with each other because you can't really tell what they're set on. The numbers wrap around the cylinder top but there's no marker telling you which one is selected. It's an inconvenient guessing game, but I wouldn't call it a dealbreaker on its own.

After the first few steps with it on the lowest tension setting, I was disgusted and certain I would be returning this piece of junk. The pedals rose too slowly so I couldn't really get into a good, steady pace. The left one wanted to take a siesta before it came back up. I kept playing around with the tension and with my stride but to no avail. (I even had a friend try it and he had the same complaint: "Why do the pedals take so long to come back up?
