IT'S BETTER!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
Don't buy this cd expecting to hear another album like "Another Minute," because it's not...IT'S BETTER! "The Sunrise EP" is the sound of a more mature and evolved Cause and Effect. Although the CD is still completely electronic (more so than their last album Innermost Station,) it has little in common with the "synth-pop" sound of the early C&E days. But fans of their earlier work should fear not because each of the five tracks on this EP are superbly well written and freshly produced pop songs that you will grow to love more and more with each listen. Here's my track by track review:Into The Light - One of my favorites and the first single. This track has a mellow house vibe and phenomenal vocals. Already getting some club and airplay this is also a great mood song to play alone with that special someone! Long Way Down - Another favorite. This song has an extremely hypnotic groove with very inspiring lyrics and a really sweet almost Kraftwerkian synth-riff throughout. Could be the next big "car commercial" theme-song! Stay - This song sounds closest to their "Trip" album. Great lyrics and an awesome all around mid-tempo C&E song. Sunrise - Title-track and IMO the best choice for a second single. A four on the floor progressive tech-groove with a really cool vocoder sound on the vocals. With the right remix this could be a club smash. Vicarage Road - A very deep and touching mid-tempo song with amazing lyrics that deal with infidelity from a child's view. Into the Light (Halou mix)- Remixed by Ryan Coseboom of Halou. This club mix is well done and is a nice alternate version, but I prefer the original. Long Way Down (Halou Mix) - Also remixed by Ryan Coseboom and my favorite of the remixes. This remix adds some slower Bjork-esque broken beats and has a darker overall feel. Awesome vocal f/x too. Sunrise (Andres Oscuro Depth Mix) - This is an after-hours sounding club dub. There is not a whole lot of the original "Sunrise" in this remix but it's still a cool bonus. I'm giving this CD a solid five out of five, and I hope that this EP is a taste of what's to come with their new album due next year!

The future's pretty bright for C&E,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
This cd has already landed itself a permanent slot in my cd changer for 2003. C&E have somehow managed to remain fairly anonymous and under-appreciated for most of their career. Sure, most people would recognize their music especially "It's Over Now" which was featured in the most famous MTV Real World Episode ever (the scene where Puck gets kicked out,) but sadly few would know the name Cause And Effect if mentioned in converstaion. After listening to The Sunrise EP, I predict all that is gonna change. "Into The Light" starts the disc beautifully with smooth vocals, a funky bass line and a laid back house beat. The rest of the EP flows seamlessly until the last beat of "Vicarage Road." This cd is the perfect combination of "club" and "chill." The thing that sets C&E apart from other artists in the electronica genre is their ability to continuously deliver great songs, this alone puts them in a class of their own. Highly Recommended!

Shockingly brilliant electronic synth!,
By
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
This is an unbelievably beautiful piece of work if you are into both synth-pop and modern trance/techno music. This album is full of lush dancey electronica that is where Depeche Mode would be today if they stayed more in the dance world. This is a huge change from C&E's more "rock" sound of the last couple of albums, but it also is a total evolution from the first album, in the way Depeche Mode quickly evolved from the bouncy bubble-gum synth of "Speak & Spell". Portions of this EP remind me of the ethereal late-night acid house sound of the Beloved, a band you should check out if you like this EP.
