3.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, Mediocre, Shadow Of Former Days EP
Like most EPs this CD has a couple of stand out tracks with some filler. I'm not saying this is a bad CD but the value for the price isn't so good, it's expensive and I only thoroughly enjoyed two tracks "Into The Light", and "Vicarage Road". Even there Amazon allows you to download the first track as an MP3. I suggest downloading it and counting yourself lucky...

Don't buy this cd expecting to hear another album like "Another Minute," because it's not...IT'S BETTER! "The Sunrise EP" is the sound of a more mature and evolved Cause and Effect. Although the CD is still completely electronic (more so than their last album Innermost Station,) it has little in common with the "synth-pop" sound of the early C&E days. But fans of their earlier work should fear not because each of the five tracks on this EP are superbly well written and freshly produced pop songs that you will grow to love more and more with each listen. Here's my track by track review:

Into The Light - One of my favorites and the first single. This track has a mellow house vibe and phenomenal vocals. Already getting some club and airplay this is also a great mood song to play alone with that special someone!

Long Way Down - Another favorite. This song has an extremely hypnotic groove with very inspiring lyrics and a really sweet almost Kraftwerkian synth-riff throughout. Could be the next big "car commercial" theme-song!

Stay - This song sounds closest to their "Trip" album. Great lyrics and an awesome all around mid-tempo C&E song.

Sunrise - Title-track and IMO the best choice for a second single. A four on the floor progressive tech-groove with a really cool vocoder sound on the vocals. With the right remix this could be a club smash.

Vicarage Road - A very deep and touching mid-tempo song with amazing lyrics that deal with infidelity from a child's view.

Into the Light (Halou mix)- Remixed by Ryan Coseboom of Halou. This club mix is well done and is a nice alternate version, but I prefer the original.

Long Way Down (Halou Mix) - Also remixed by Ryan Coseboom and my favorite of the remixes. This remix adds some slower Bjork-esque broken beats and has a darker overall feel. Awesome vocal f/x too.

Sunrise (Andres Oscuro Depth Mix) - This is an after-hours sounding club dub. There is not a whole lot of the original "Sunrise" in this remix but it's still a cool bonus.

I'm giving this CD a solid five out of five, and I hope that this EP is a taste of what's to come with their new album due next year!

5.0 out of 5 stars The future's pretty bright for C&E, February 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
This cd has already landed itself a permanent slot in my cd changer for 2003. C&E have somehow managed to remain fairly anonymous and under-appreciated for most of their career. Sure, most people would recognize their music especially "It's Over Now" which was featured in the most famous MTV Real World Episode ever (the scene where Puck gets kicked out,) but sadly few would know the name Cause And Effect if mentioned in converstaion. After listening to The Sunrise EP, I predict all that is gonna change.

"Into The Light" starts the disc beautifully with smooth vocals, a funky bass line and a laid back house beat. The rest of the EP flows seamlessly until the last beat of "Vicarage Road." This cd is the perfect combination of "club" and "chill." The thing that sets C&E apart from other artists in the electronica genre is their ability to continuously deliver great songs, this alone puts them in a class of their own. Highly Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly brilliant electronic synth!, January 9, 2005

This is an unbelievably beautiful piece of work if you are into both synth-pop and modern trance/techno music. This album is full of lush dancey electronica that is where Depeche Mode would be today if they stayed more in the dance world. This is a huge change from C&E's more "rock" sound of the last couple of albums, but it also is a total evolution from the first album, in the way Depeche Mode quickly evolved from the bouncy bubble-gum synth of "Speak & Spell". Portions of this EP remind me of the ethereal late-night acid house sound of the Beloved, a band you should check out if you like this EP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cause & Effect Review, March 1, 2003

This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
This album has a lot to offer. First of all, it appeals to all musical tastes. It has very soothing rhythmic beats that create an emotion for each of the songs. The great aspect to this album is that it can played anywhere; a cocktail party, lounging on the couch or commuting to and from work. All I can say is that this CD has been in my car for past two weeks and I am enjoying it as much as I did the first time I heard it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sacramento Fan, May 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
I just recently became aware that Cause and Effect had a new cd after hearing Into the Light on a late night Dj/Mix show in Sacramento a couple of weeks ago. But I didn't pick up a copy untill after seeing them play live here last week. The show was amazing and the new songs really stood out in their set. I bought the cd and have been listening to it non-stop since. I absolutely love it! I've been into C&E since 94, their sound has changed a lot since then but IMO the new stuff is better than anything they've put out before. Seems like their musical tastes have grown and expanded as have mine. Highlights are Long Way Down, Into the Light and Sunrise. My only complaint is that it could have been a longer disc but I'm giving it a 5 star anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, July 28, 2004

Haaa...it's pretty damn funny people are criticizing this album. All I have to say is it's one of the best EPs ever produced. The first 4 songs are incredible. Since I got this CD in July of '03, I have listened to those 4 songs over and over hundreds upon hundreds of times in the past year and have still not gotten one ounce sick of them. They are perfect. So damn smooth and loungy with great beats and some of the best vocals ever. The perfect balance of everything. I am not exaggerating when I say I've listened to this EP hundreds upon hundreds of times. I don't know what else to say. 10 stars out of 5. Yeah, that's right. 10 stars. Anyone who dislikes it truly doesn't have an appreciation for the art of music. End of discussion. Buy it. You'll thank me countless times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing mix, June 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
Take the best bits of house, electro, chill and pop... meld it into one and what do you get? A sweet little gem called "The Sunrise EP." Combining some similar elements as Everything But The Girl's last couple of album's, these five tracks somehow seem to cover more territory. Rob Rowe's smooth relaxed vocals and Keith Milo's spare but effective arrangements are a refreshing addition to the world of mass produced overly repetitive dance music. Download the single and take it for a test drive... then come back and buy this cd. You'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational Sunrise, August 2, 2004

Like some reviewers have said here, it's a bit short, but hey, it does say EP. Sunrise makes my maddening rush hour drive home from work seem almost tolerable. If you're a fan of electronic sounds with a chilled out tone, you can't not love this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars A return to form by Cause and Effect, March 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sunrise EP (Audio CD)
After the flop that was Innermost Station, Cause and Effect return to their roots as an electro band with a little more intelligence. Their sophomore effort, Trip, was brilliant - but owed that credit probably to Martyn Phillips. The debut CD was great, but the principal songwritter was taken from us. Keith's production work is very smooth, but even though the songs borrow from several different electro-genere's, I seem to find this disc just ever so slightly boring; albeit only boring enough to give this CD 4 stars out of 5. Pretty good work.
