Fantastic!!!,
This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
I couldn't wait for the third book in Frank's series to come out as each one seemed better than the last. This one is no exception! 'Sunrise' ties up all the loose ends from the previous novels, clearing up issues I had not understood before. And finally (!) Chloe and Cheftu get through a whole book without questioning each other's love! They are the ultimate love match, destined to be togeter throughout time. The end is left open so Ms. Frank, can we hope for a book 4? Wonderfully researched, I felt like I was there. A great, original take on the characters we think we know so well, from the Bible. Stayed up reading till my eyes were crossing from fatigue, at 5am, but I could not put it down. Please, please give us a sequel. I love these people. Maybe they could go to the New World next? The Aztecs or Incas? Great story.

Another vicarious trip through the Bible, and another winner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
Suzanne Frank's wit, and obvious knowledge of Biblical times makes this book a page turner and a story you will long remember. Again we meet our time-travelling pair; Chloe and Cheftu, this time during the moments before Jerusalem becomes King David's Kingdom, and before the conquests of this city begin. In a style that leaves your mouth agape, you are introduced to the characters who WERE the Bible. Ms. Frank not only weaves an original 'You are there', but she continues the special love and devotion between Chloe and Cheftu. This series is a winner, start at the first and work your way through, it's worth the trip!

Judaism 101,
This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
I couldn't wait for the 3rd installment of Suzanne Franks' series based on time travel and our heroine, Chloe Kingsley. Ms. Franks' wit is up to par with the other two books. I realized that I was trying to remember my bible and comparing the story of David with what I had read. I am glad that this time, Chloe and Cheftu had a more "normal" married life together. But I do want them to go on other adventures together in other time periods. How about the French Revolution? The possibilities are endless, as I am sure Ms Frank realizes what an audience she has captured. Please..may we have more?

Incredibly sloppy research -- a surprise after books 1 & 2,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
After galloping through books 1 and 2 of this series (true guilty pleasures) I couldn't wait and bought "Mediterranean" hardcover. I was quite unpleasantly surprised; the "exquisite research" seems to have gone by the board. Apparently it didn't occur to anyone in the writing and editorial process that corn, as in "corn on the cob" (page 22) is a NEW WORLD VEGETABLE. This is one we all learned in grade school. And bougainvillea (page 96) is a South American plant named for de Bougainville, 18th century French explorer. Okay, these are true howlers that nevertheless don't affect the plot. But the ignorance of the life cycle of the flea does. Fleas can't live on "manna" -- they live on BLOOD. Only. And the rapturous "oh wow, this is the Bible" got rather wearying. Final grade: books 1 and 2: 4 stars. Book 3...forget it.

Great fantasy time travel,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
When Dallas resident Chloe Kingsley stepped through the time portal in 1996, all she wanted was to find her missing spouse Cheftu and understand the language of the era. Chloe soon realizes that she landed (loosely put) in the Mediterranean when she is rescued by Philistines who, believing she must be a tail-less mermaid, take her to a temple in Gaza.Meanwhile, Cheftu is also in the same time period, but happens to be in Egypt where he finds himself in trouble by disrespecting the Sun God. However, circumstances and needs soon allow Cheftu to join Chloe as both become vassals to the Hebrew King David. Cheftu finds lost gold while Chloe helps with military strategy. The Hebrews must contend with the evil RaEm, who gained knowledge of the twentieth century when she occupied Chloe's body for two years. Only with Chloe and Cheftu and the powerful Ark of the Covenant does David have any hope to defeat his foe. SUNRISE ON THE MEDITERRANEAN, the latest Chloe-Cheftu ancient historical saga, is an intelligent mixing of biblical characters with modern day time travelers. The action-packed and picturesque story line makes the lands along the Mediterranean seem as if they exist so we can see them for ourselves. The characters appear genuine including those written about in the Old Testament. Awesome Suzanne Frank has written a classic novel that along with its' predecessors (REFLECTION IN THE NILE and SHADOWS ON THE AEGEAN) that fans will enjoy for years to come. Harriet Klausner

Great conclusion to a great trilogy,

This review is from: Sunrise on the Mediterranean (Hardcover)
Chloe and Cheftu are transported from the fabled, sinking Atlantis to the early days of King David of the Hebrews. Separated, they must find each other again. Forced into slavery, Chloe and Cheftu earn respect and eventually their freedom. They join the Hebrews in their forging of a new nation in this exciting book of time travel and history. A very apt conclusion to a very exciting trilogy.

Ms. Frank's third installment of this trilogy is lacking in comparison to its counterparts Shadows on the Nile and Reflections of the Aegean. Sunrise on the Mediterranean is a very fast read, quite thin and way too predictable. I feel read the book more to discover the conclusion of the triology than for the story contained within the book itself. I expected more, I suppose, and I found myself disappointed.

First, I must say that although I love this series and can read it over and over again (rare for me)...I've found that I believe the Reflections is the best of these three, with Agean being second. The wonderful thing about Frank's writing is she takes us back to these ancient times and paints such a vivid picture of life with rich details and characters. You really feel like you're living in Ancient Egypt or Atlantis! This is what writing is meant to be like and what sets Frank apart from all the others. While reading Med., I found the picture just wasn't as complete as the first two. I loved the plot and the story was fascinating, but I just didn't feel like the details were there. In the first half, the story jumped around between three settings, so you never got to really sink into any one of them. A whole story could have been written about Akhnaten (what happened to Nefriti??) and Tuti, but I feel like Frank rushed through this part of the novel. Then, when we finally settled in Jerusalem, there wasn't enough time left in the book to really feel drawn in. It had the potential to be great, I could feel that. But I feel this one wasn't as developed as the others. In Reflections, the exodus and plagues of Egypt were detailed and involved all five senses so the reader really felt like they were living up to and through it all with Chloe and Cheftu. The story of Jerusalem and David was just as exciting, but there was so much that could have been expounded on and filled in. In the end, a story with great potential packed into too little space and rushed through. Because I know how Frank's books CAN be...this one almost left me feeling cheated. |
