4.0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Release From Mortal Treason, July 26, 2005
By
B. Chase (Northeast PA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
Mortal Treason have dropped what appears to be a quite epic album on the masses, however they need some more *word of mouth* to get the steam behind them because not many people outside the christian music scene know who they are.

Anyway on the to the album itself... All I can say is wow. "A Sunrise Over a Sea Of Blood" completely obliterates their previous release "A Call To Martyrs."

"ASOASOB" might be the best mix of blackmetal & late 90's metalcore I've ever heard. The growled vocals are identical to that of Dan from Zao's & the deeper vocals are quite familar to that of a Black Dahlia Murder.

Musically on this release, Mortal Treason borrows heavily from the blackmetal genre & criscrosses it with 90's influenced metalcore...bands like Zao (Blood & Fire era), All Out War, and even Darkest Hour come to mind. You can also hear some Bleeding Through sneak through on the keyboard parts. And overall the keyboards arent that effective. They act as background music and dont really take away from the other instruments at all, which is a definite plus.

Sound production & quality: The the overall production isnt the best, but its nowhere near bad. You can hear all the instruments fine, the vocals are produced well, and drums sound good. It sounds like 1999. Which isnt a bad thing, its just that production is nowhere near as slick as most cds today. The only thing I can complain about is the snare because its too low. It doesnt sound bad, It's just sometimes during the blastbeats, its hard to hear it.

Lyrics: Not being a christian, SOME of the lyrics arent any good to me. Im sure other christians are into them, and thats fine. You guys can do youre own thing, but by singing about God, you begin to alienate yourself to other crowds. And I respect those that have beliefs about anything in life, & writing about them is your own freewill. Thankfully though, Mortal Treason doesnt sing about God on every track, and for me thats a "saving grace" hehe.

Overall this cd owns. Great mix of blackmetal & 90's metalcore. And for the kids that love the mosh, dont worry... theres enough mosh on this record to make Hatebreed shed a tear. No happy singing, just straight in your face metal brutality. The only reason I gave this cd a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the lyrical content. Not being a Christian, some of these lyrics dont mean anything to me.

I recommend this for fans of early Zao, All Out War, Bleeding Through, Undying, Darkest Hour, and The Black Dahlia Murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
i think the volume level of the vocals was lower on this cd than on the first(2004). they've added piano/synth to this cd, which sounds f**kin awesome. the guitars are more complicated this time.
the only thing i thought was wrong with this cd as the production. the production wasnt as good as it was the first time.
this cd also tends to get repetitive. the first one keeps you listening

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutally Masterful Deathcore, September 25, 2010
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
From the delicate keys to the pummeling squeals and growls, this album is all about the MUSIC. Unlike some deathcore bands I've heard, "Mortal Treason" actually sounds like they know what they're doing... I'd put this album nearly up with Impending Doom's "The Serpent Servant" (which happens to be my favorite deathcore album ever.)

If you like your music heavy, gritty, well written and uplifting... you will LOVE "Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood."

Also Recommended:

Horror-With Blood Comes Cleansing (Brutal Deathcore with Completely Scriptural Lyrics)
The Serpent Servant-Impending Doom (Excellent/catchy hybrid of metalcore and death growls. Awesome lyrics and hooks.)
The Physics of Fire-Becoming the Archetype (Prog/Death Metal with a retro flair. This is a good one for recovering 80's metalheads.)
The Raven and the Reaping-The Famine (Technical Metalcore with a Grindcore Flair... Subpar lyrics and writing are at least mostly made up for in instrumental skill and sheer speed.)
