4.0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Release From Mortal Treason, July 26, 2005
By
B. Chase (Northeast PA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
Mortal Treason have dropped what appears to be a quite epic album on the masses, however they need some more *word of mouth* to get the steam behind them because not many people outside the christian music scene know who they are.

Anyway on the to the album itself... All I can say is wow. "A Sunrise Over a Sea Of Blood" completely obliterates their previous release "A Call To Martyrs."

"ASOASOB" might be the best mix of blackmetal & late 90's metalcore I've ever heard. The growled vocals are identical to that of Dan from Zao's & the deeper vocals are quite familar to that of a Black Dahlia Murder.

Musically on this release, Mortal Treason borrows heavily from the blackmetal genre & criscrosses it with 90's influenced metalcore...bands like Zao (Blood & Fire era), All Out War, and even Darkest Hour come to mind. You can also hear some Bleeding Through sneak through on the keyboard parts. And overall the keyboards arent that effective. They act as background music and dont really take away from the other instruments at all, which is a definite plus.

Sound production & quality: The the overall production isnt the best, but its nowhere near bad. You can hear all the instruments fine, the vocals are produced well, and drums sound good. It sounds like 1999. Which isnt a bad thing, its just that production is nowhere near as slick as most cds today. The only thing I can complain about is the snare because its too low. It doesnt sound bad, It's just sometimes during the blastbeats, its hard to hear it.

Lyrics: Not being a christian, SOME of the lyrics arent any good to me. Im sure other christians are into them, and thats fine. You guys can do youre own thing, but by singing about God, you begin to alienate yourself to other crowds. And I respect those that have beliefs about anything in life, & writing about them is your own freewill. Thankfully though, Mortal Treason doesnt sing about God on every track, and for me thats a "saving grace" hehe.

Overall this cd owns. Great mix of blackmetal & 90's metalcore. And for the kids that love the mosh, dont worry... theres enough mosh on this record to make Hatebreed shed a tear. No happy singing, just straight in your face metal brutality. The only reason I gave this cd a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the lyrical content. Not being a Christian, some of these lyrics dont mean anything to me.

I recommend this for fans of early Zao, All Out War, Bleeding Through, Undying, Darkest Hour, and The Black Dahlia Murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
i think the volume level of the vocals was lower on this cd than on the first(2004). they've added piano/synth to this cd, which sounds f**kin awesome. the guitars are more complicated this time.
the only thing i thought was wrong with this cd as the production. the production wasnt as good as it was the first time.
this cd also tends to get repetitive. the first one keeps you listening

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutally Masterful Deathcore, September 25, 2010
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
From the delicate keys to the pummeling squeals and growls, this album is all about the MUSIC. Unlike some deathcore bands I've heard, "Mortal Treason" actually sounds like they know what they're doing... I'd put this album nearly up with Impending Doom's "The Serpent Servant" (which happens to be my favorite deathcore album ever.)

If you like your music heavy, gritty, well written and uplifting... you will LOVE "Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood."

Also Recommended:

Horror-With Blood Comes Cleansing (Brutal Deathcore with Completely Scriptural Lyrics)
The Serpent Servant-Impending Doom (Excellent/catchy hybrid of metalcore and death growls. Awesome lyrics and hooks.)
The Physics of Fire-Becoming the Archetype (Prog/Death Metal with a retro flair. This is a good one for recovering 80's metalheads.)
The Raven and the Reaping-The Famine (Technical Metalcore with a Grindcore Flair... Subpar lyrics and writing are at least mostly made up for in instrumental skill and sheer speed.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, August 15, 2007
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
This is one AMAZING CD. Mortal Treason deliver a brutal, beautifull, and soulfull melodic Death/Black metal assault on the senses. With thunderous Double Bass, Driving Riffs, angelic keys, Beastial growls, and horrid shrieks, This is definely a must have for any fan of Death, Unblack,Melodic Death.

Defintely won't Dissapoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS MOST DEF A" W-O-W!! HOW DO THEY DO THAT?!!" CD, September 18, 2006
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
THE FACT THAT THE MUSIC IS AWESOME IN AND OF ITSELF CANNOT BE HONESTLY OVERLOOKED OR DENIED. THE SHEER, EXTREME SKILL INVOLVED IN EXECUTING THIS BRAND OF INSTRUMENTATION, ALONG WITH THE UNIQUE AND TEDIOUS, CREATIVELY DARK VOCALIZATIONS AND THE SYNCHRONIZATION OF BOTH AT A SMOOTH, HYPERBOLIC, THRASHING SPEED IS SUBLIMELY NOTEWORTHY AND REQUISITE OF A STROKE OF GENIUS JUST TO EXECUTE, WITHOUT TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ALL OF THE OTHER DEEP, MOOD-SETTING NUANCES THAT GO INTO EFFECTING THIS GENRE OF MUSIC THAT IS REFERRED TO AS HEAVY OR DEATH METAL, OR JUST SIMPLY THRASH. THE MUSIC OF THE GROUP MORTAL TREASON WILL CONTINUE AS A MAINTSTAY AMONG ITS INNUMERABLE AND LOYAL AND EVER-GROWING DEVOTEES WORLDWIDE, THOUGH THE INDIVIDUALS THAT COMPRISE THE GROUP WILL NO LONGER WORK AS A SINGLE UNIT OR GROUP. THEY ARE CALLED AFRESH TO MARCH, NO LONGER AS A SINGLE UNIT BUT INDIVIDUALLY, TO THE BEAT OF A DISTANT DRUMMER THUS EXPONENTIALLY MULTIPLYING AND EXTENDING THEIR MUSICAL GIFTS. MORTAL TREASON WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THEIR MYSPACE PAGE AS A GROUP HOWEVER, AS THEY PLUMB THE DEPTHS AND HEIGHTS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE INDIVIDUAL CALLINGS REMAINING, UNDOUBTEDLY, ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF, AND EXPLODING INTO, BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS IN THE WORLD OF METAL, THRASH, AND WHATEVER FORM OF MUSIC THEIR RESPECTIVE CALLINGS DICTATE AS THESE CALLINGS UNFOLD AND PERSONIFY EVER MORE MAJESTICALLY IN THEM AND IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL UNDERGROUND, YET FOREGROUND TUNNELS TO SURE, PERMANENT INTERNATIONAL STARDOM...ABSOLUTELY!!!

This bands second cd surprised me like no other cd has before. after hearing the first cd, i thought the second cd was going to be bland and simple.. but holy crap. its like a whole new, amazing band. new members, amazing guitars and drums. and now theres keyboards to make it even better. definetly a must-buy cd for any metal, death metal, or hardcore fan. too bad this band is now broken up, but this cd will forever be one of the greatst additions to my cd collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hardcore Album of the Summer!!, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
This is an awsome album. I bought their first cd, "A Call to the Martyrs" and it was awsome. But this one blows Mortal Treasons debut out of the water. The music is harder and faster paste than the last album. The Keyboard is a nice addition it adds a really good effect. Each song is different from each other not all of them soud the same like on a call to the martyrs. If you liked MT's first album you'll like this one. Mortal Treason deffinatly shows that a Christian band can be hardcore and not be ashamed of it. I peronally think thats awsome. Also for fans a haste the day, extol, zao, and the chariot. Buy this album...its a must have for any hardcore fan Christian or not. Keep up the good work Mortal Treason. God Bless

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Christian Black/Death metal band around.., October 9, 2005
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
Mortal Treason had me hooked from the first day i ltistened to them. They have everything you'd want from a band. Talent.Heavyness, and keyboards with a REALLY HOT chic playing them (Too bad shes married to the singer =( )When i first heard Underoath "Cries Of The Past" i was amazed by the power that the Christian metal scene posseses. But as most people know Underoath is a new band now and they suck to no extent. I hope Mortal Treason doesn't sell out. Stay Heavy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars BETTER!!, September 5, 2005
This review is from: Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood (Audio CD)
Ok for starters this album is better then there first b/c of the guitar set up and the way they do the vocals b/c they sound a lot deeper and darker almost like a black or death metal growl. This whole cd is definately in my opinion alittle harder then hardcore. Heres a song rating 1-5.
1. Best Case Scenario (its an intro w/a fancy name)
2. Worse Case Scenario 5/5 this is were the deep growls come in!
3. Dig Your Own Grave 4/5 a good song.
4. Abbadon 5/5 this were more deep growls come in and grab you!
5. The Falling 3/5 alittle slow of a starter then it picks up
6. Sunrise Over a Sea of Blood 5/5 the guitars and drums at the start are really good!
7. Taste Of A Bitter Soul 4/5 good drum set up at the start w/the deep vocals.
8. These Evil Days 5/5 good vocal start up filled w/creative guitar.
9. One Hour From Forever 5/5 fast paced and intense
10. Death Is The Beginning 5/5 an 8 min. epic that kinda slows down alittle but don't get me wrong this song still rips w/the awesome drum set up and the vocals are good to. Now don't get me wrong but I loved there first cd but this definately better then there first though. Unlike many other bands there sound keeps improving check them out on tour soon!
