3.0 out of 5 stars Slick soulful funk from the Isleys stable
Everett Collins, Ronnie Scruggs, David Townsend,Tony Herbert and Kevin Jones made up Sunrize for their only album, this self titled effort from 1982. With help from the Isley Brothers, they funk their way through seven tracks of varying quality. 5.0 out of 5 stars Amen, Everett Collins. You and your group certainly know how to create some jammin' grooves, October 26, 2007
This review is from: Sunrize (Audio CD)
They're barely known, but these guys sound like highly seasoned pros, with excellent musicianship and tight, funky grooves. Though they only hit (and moderately at that) with the opener "Who's Stickin' It", the best, most kick-butt song on here is "I Just Wanna Make Sweet Love Tonight." In any case, Mr. Collins, whichever song you consider to be your crowning achievement, Sunrize is indisputably responsible for one of the more unfortunately undiscovered R&B albums of the 80s, and I'm sorry that you never came back for more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slick soulful funk from the Isleys stable, April 15, 2011
This review is from: Sunrize (Audio CD)
Everett Collins, Ronnie Scruggs, David Townsend,Tony Herbert and Kevin Jones made up Sunrize for their only album, this self titled effort from 1982. With help from the Isley Brothers, they funk their way through seven tracks of varying quality. Firstly, the musicianship is excellent throughout: it features some nice guitar work, synthesiser and some nice strings by Chris Jasper, which were declining rapidly in dance music during the 80s. First track is "Who's Stickin It,Parts I and II", a long funky opener which would not be out of place in the scene of a strip club in an early 80s movie. This song is funky and fun, but does tend to become a bit repetitious. Next is the slower "Love You More Than Words Can Say" with some nice string work, and harmonies from the boys and a pleasant melody. "Someones Taken My Hand" is another slow one, in that old style ballad which would be perfect for smooching. It is so-so. Then comes the faster "Come And Get My Lovin" which is alright.Sometimes the vocals can be a little strained and that is not just for this song. Next up is my favourite song on the album "I Just Wanna Make Sweet Love Tonight", which has that slick, Solar sort of sound so popular in the early 80s (Shalamar, Dynasty) a funky sound, good vocals and catchy melody. "Honey I Love You" starts out with a haunting piano sound and is one of the albums slow spots.."Hello Love" is the song where the strained vocals are the most noticeable and doesn't really do much for me and finally "You Are The One" is a moderately funky song that is also fairly short about three minutes, most of them are around the 5 minute mark. Funkytown Grooves are responsible for re-releasing this, although I think there is also a Japanese pressing. There are no liner notes except for the credits and thank you notes that I assume originally appeared on the album. I would recommend this to fans of early 80's soul and funk, fans of Shalamar and the Isley Brothers who appreciates SONGS and good musicianship.
