2.0 out of 5 stars Not so Sunsational..., April 20, 2009
By
I purchased this awning two years ago for a west-facing window on my Phoenix home. The awning gets full afternoon sun. The material itself has held up remarkably well, with less fading than I expected. The problem is the stitching that holds the whole thing together. After two years, the cotton stitching on most of the seams has rotted away. One result is that the outer metal frame has separated from the material. Needless to say, the awning is shot. Sure, you can get replacement material, but that costs nearly as much as what I paid for the awning. Seems they would spend a little more on stitching that lasts as long as the awning material. Definitely disappointed in this product, especially considering the manufacturer's claim that the product lasts up to 15 years. Not true.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good shade, fast shipping, easy to install, December 16, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this as an emergency measure to protect our old wooden windows from rain, etc...it also makes the house look much nicer. Basically, I installed some metal flashing strips underneath the shade and sealed them with heavy duty caulking to prevent water from dripping down the exterior walls into our windows - poor design as our windows have a "bull-nose" type of frame which just directs all water straight into the windows. In the future I will install the metal flashing prior to the shade (duh)...shade completely covers the flashing so you can't tell it's there.

Anyway - back to the shades. They arrived faster than Amazon's system could track...within a couple days of ordering. I was very impressed with the shipping speed.

Instructions for installing were fairly clear and it took me about 2 hours to install one 4' shade. I expect the next shades I order will take 1 hour or less now that I know what I'm doing. I was a bit intimidated by drilling into our stucco but it was easy with a masonry bit and Tapcon screws (as recommended by someone at our big box home improvement center). I sealed the screws with some heavy duty caulking for roofs to prevent any water getting through to the stucco - probably overkill but worth the peace of mind. I also carefully measured everything multiple times so this extended the installation time.

Overall look is nice, the Burgundy is a nice deep color. Awning doesn't seem as tight and clean looking as the picture on Amazon of the brown shade...they look a little more "loose" like the green shade on the website. I will check back in as they get exposed to the elements to say how they hold up. For the price I am pleased since the Sunbrella equivalent is at least twice as much and would take weeks to ship.
