Editorial Reviews

Review

I'm of the firm belief that there should be more basketball poems in the world. This book is filled with them, each line arching like a jumpshot off the page. Dougherty must have been writing in "a zone," because he doesn't miss -- Sherman Alexie

Splendid beginning! -- Charles Simic

With these spicy snippets from life on the blacktop, Dougherty displays the unharnessed, streetwise voice that has made him one of New England's most valued and in-demand writers and performers. In the sharp detailed writing, his editor's eye is obvious but it's also the firsthand knowledge of the sweaty taunts, scraped knees and missed layups that make these poems pulse with real life -- Patricia Smith

From the Publisher

A founding member of the Drive-By Poets Collective, Sean Thomas Dougherty is one of the nation's most highly regarded performance poets, featured at such venues as The Associated Writing Programs Conference, The Lollapalooza Music Festival and The National Poetry Slam. The author of two previous collections he is the editor of award winning Red Brick Review, and an editor at Syracuse University's Salt Hill Journal. He teaches at Syracuse University and for the Arts In Education Institute of Central, NY. Now in its third printing, Sunset By The Chain-Link Fence, proves to be one of the hottest chapbooks published today. This collection of street poems is straight from the court.

5.0 out of 5 stars For hoops everywhere, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunset by the Chain-Link Fence (Paperback)
back when I was a star for the Syracuse Orangemen faking slow footed forwards out of their jocks, I would have loved a small book of poems like this to reflect back upon during those down times. Dougherty gets it right. He captures the schoolyard feel and the threat of violence that surrounds the teeming love in the city. These are real people I could relate to, like the hotshot female ball player Maria who has the jumpshot I've always wanted.
