Another Chill Thrill From Holland!,
By Gorbyman "Cool Music Lover" (Provence, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunset (Dig) (Audio CD)
WOW!
When I heard this the first time It reminded me of a 21st century version of the theme concept albums of my youth. Great concept!-wonderful musical storyline linked by a dry humourous spoken narrative. And can this guy play! A guitar prodigy fom Amsterdam, Camiel is the latest in a fine cool line of chill/lounge/downtempo/worldly , genre-bending Dutch musicians that also include Adani & Wolf and Praful. Don't even think about-just Do it and click "purchase"!

... 'light jazz'. Camiel's an artist out of the Netherlands and this is his first album from back in 2002. It actually took a bit of time for it to come up in Amazon, but... here it is! I got into some of his music when checking out various compilations, like Cafe Samba and Jazz Lounge. Since I liked both songs, the next step was to check out the artist.
And this isn't a bad release. "Sunset" starts off rather positively. It actually reminded me a bit of Troubleman's cd, only it's far less electronically twinged. That's followed up with "I'm Ready", where you hear him on guitar, adding a little bit of funk to the sound wihtout the tune being overbearing. But... there wasn't a great deal of adventure in the track. "Follow Her" came afterwards and the music was actually pretty nice, although it was admittedly a bit of a cheesy tune with vocals. That can be a dangerous approach but then again, sometimes that's what made the old Italian bossa soundtracks fun for today (like when you hear the woman say... "You're so groovy"). Other tracks that stood out were "Sintra", "El Alba" and "Eighty Eight". The mood of the cd in general is pretty easy going and low-key. Actually... to be honest... this album reminds me of something that more... *mature*... fans would listen to when they're driving home from work/listening to the 'soft-jazz' radio stations that play a healthy dosage of David Sanborn. Nothing wrong with that at all, mind you... [yeah, I did a bad job sugarcoating it, didn't I? (edited as they sensored my review...)] :) That's it in a nutshell. While this album didn't necessarily grab me, I would still recommend this to anyone that's a fan of light jazz. I think if you're a fan of Praful, you'll be interested in this and if you haven't heard Praful but love this, you might like Praful even more. You may also like a little known guitarist named Lars Bartkuhn. Sometimes I spin his stuff (Treasure Everything), the sound on it may get dated eventually but there's an energy to his music.

Camiel, the next thing in chill jazz,

Another artist I have heard on my local smooth jazz station, I am fond of Camiel's neo-Brazilian tune "El Alba". The rest of the tracks have electronic effects to liven up the tunes, but it is Camiel's guitar works that interests me.

Got lucky and heard CAMIEL while traveling on the airplane from SanFrancisco to Japan. The song "I'm ready" is great! I couldn't find it for the longest time, because I didn't know who the artist was nor did I know the title of the song. But finally my local Jazz station interviewed him on the air and thus, I found out who it is. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this CD. It's nice and fresh. Not only Jazzy, but also kind of House, and a little Funk as well. If you have any ear for "musical" music, then you will enjoy this jammin CD.

I purchased this CD a few weeks ago, and I really enjoy it. each track has its own flavor, a style I call " trans Caf'e jazz ". very mello and flavorful some tracks can be played on radio some are for the club scene and some are for the small cafe setting. Camiel's work is wonderful I give this CD a 5 Star rating.

If there were such a place as Hell, and I went there, the Devil would tie me up, put my headphones on me, and make me listen to smooth jazz 24/7 as my punishment. I can only take about 15 minutes of smooth jazz before I go batty. Yes, much of the musical idiom of this dazzling album reminds one of smooth jazz and stylistically it borrows heavily from that genre, but Sunset is etheric, beautiful music without an iota of the elevator music kitsch pervasive in smooth jazz. The best cuts are "You Can Stay", a lovely, emotive, polished gem. "Sunset", a downtempo classic with alternate lush and lively syths, sad, cool Rhodes underpinning, snappy drum line and a great guitar riff. The catchy, funky "Maybe". The haunting electronica of "Waiting for the Sun" and....well, just say this is one of those rare albums without a cut you would want to skip or do without. This young Dutch musical genius combines guitar virtuosity that echoes Wes Montgomery and Larry Carleton with the arrangement and production skills of Quincy Jones or Kaskade, along with tasteful facility in electronic music. A brilliant Tour-de-force of chill jazz.

This is one of my favorite records; if you like lounge, house, bossa nova, soul, R&B and electronica all rolled into 1 then this is your record. Beautiful, honest and touching - listen to "Follow Her" and "I Would", as you're treated to a man's narrative as he details the initial meeting and subsequent hookup with a beautiful woman. Every single track is a treasure. Camiel wrote, arranged and played everything on most of these tracks, and this young talented Dutch artist deftly moves between genres and makes them his own. This is a must-have for any mature DJ or avid music lover!
