4.0 out of 5 stars Rockin', July 18, 2007

This review is from: Sunset Over London (Audio CD)
Jools Holland is a British blues and Boogie Woogie Pianst who initially had success with Squeeze in the 70's and 80's and has presented his own TV music program on the BBC in the UK for more than a decade now. This album is one of many he has recorded with his rhythm and Blues Orchestra and its very good.

Sam Brown start things of with a gospelly shout on 'The Seventh Sacrament', this is followed by a rockin' (or should it be swinging?) version of 'Let the Good Times Roll'. This has a great Basie influenced big band arrangement. There are some oddities on this album such as the cover of the 'Dangerman' TV theme, and Thelonius Monk's 'Well You Needn't', both of which are fun tracks, but I think Jazz purists may find the conversion of the Monk classic into a mainly rock/blues based piece a little hard to take!

Jools Holland also wrote a number of the songs and sings the lead vocal on a number of the tracks. It has to be said that his voice is not that strong. However the compensation is in his excellent blues and boogie Piano playing at which he is acknowledged as one of the best in the UK. All in all the album IS good, and has enough great moments to compensate for the occasional odd choice of material.
