Book Description

January 2, 1997
Private investigator Ronnie Ventana is sitting alone on a bench in the middle of the night, at the San Francisco intersection of Sunset and Santiago. she is there to observe the grim anniversary of her parents' fatal car crash twenty years earlier--an "accident" that has never seemed entirely accidental to her. But then, there in the darkness, she notices two men dumping a body in the shrubs. and a young witness, who's also a friend, wants to get involved in solving the case, What had started as a midnight vigil--personal and poignant--turns into a public investigation of a very different crime, Now, without warning, Ronnie is up to her ears in a new case that snakes through a tunnel of civic corruption and brings her fresh revelations about her parents' long-ago double murder.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the fourth mystery featuring Ronnie Ventana (including 1996 Edgar Best Paperback nominee Charged with Guilt), finds the San Francisco PI entangled in a murder investigation somehow connected to the mysterious deaths of her parents in a car accident 20 years before. Ventana sees someone dump a body near the same spot, but the police seem reluctant to look into the case and in fact downplay the identification of a possible suspect. As ever, the dialogue (especially that between Ventana and her trusty associate Blackie) is clever and entertaining, and readers will sympathize with Ventana's fierce desire to understand what happened to her family. But the action isn't as fast as in earlier books, and many of Ventana's relationships with other characters seem forced.

4.0 out of 5 stars best of the series, August 20, 1999

This review is from: Sunset and Santiago (Paperback)
This was the best of the Ronnie Ventana series so far. As an expatriate San Franciscan, I find these books entertaining and nostalgic. Ronnie is a great character for mystery fans. Ronnie is also a true San Francisco character. White brings more of Ronnie's personality and background into this story in a way that she didnt do in previous books in series. I look forward to the next editions of this series.
