Keenly Disappointed,

At the outset please let me say that there are tracks on this CD that are quite good. "Sweet Sea", for example, is fabulous, as are some of the instrumentals such as "Hatching Day" and "Gatheritza". But where the album falls sadly short is in two areas. First, because it uses instruments that are clearly not contained in any of the books, such as the Hurdy Gurdy, Violin, Viola, and Dulcimer (to name a few). Do these instruments sound good and is the music performed well? Yes. But is their use faithful to the instruments that we know "existed" on Pern? NO. My greatest disappointment, though, is the way that Menolly's songs are presented. We know from the books that Menolly is an unusually gifted musician who could craft songs with infectious and irresistable melodic lines. But the Menolly songs in this album leave so much to be desired that one has to wonder what the writers were thinking. Not one of them..."The Little Queen", "Song For Petiron","Brekke's Cry", and the "Run" song...have any of the life, spirit, or magic that we would hope to find in someone as talented as Menolly. I give the writers credit for trying, but I honestly think that if they had focused in on the melodic lines Menolly was known for, rather than creating their exceedingly strange arrangements they would have captured more of the essential spirit behind her music.

I have loved Anne McCaffrey's Pern sense I discovered Dragondrums as a teen . The Harper Hall trilogy is my faverite series . When I heard a cd of music was coming out I kept checking here to get it . The cover is the cover of my copy of Dragonsong .I know I should talk of the music . Beautiful . The prefect music to read a Pern novel by . It gives a new dimention to the stories . You can hear the music you have only read of . I wish I had a way to get to Pern . I'd never look back or regret my choice .

Sunset's gold,
This review is from: Sunset's Gold (MP3 Download)
The music is very beautiful. The songs are better than I imagined when I read the Harper Hall trilogy. When I listen to the songs I remember to books. My 2yr old likes the songs too.
