The sun and the moon shine down on a young boy as he spends a day by the sea. "Sun shines on the mountains, sun shines on the sea. Sun shines on my pillow, and says wake up to me."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1. This brief, poetic, circular tale follows a boy throughout the course of his active day. From the early morning when the shining sun wakes him until the "Moon shines on my pillow, and says good night to me," the out-of-doors beckons and his summertime adventures are recorded. The full-color, full-page oil or acrylic illustrations evoke a serene and beautiful seaside setting. They are realistically rendered, and background details add to the spare text. Beginning readers will appreciate the large-type print and repetition, although some of the vocabulary (fireflies, among, mountains) may be challenging. Sunshine, Moonshine will also make a gentle bedtime story for toddlers and preschoolers.?Sharon R. Pearce, San Antonio Public Library, TX

From Booklist

Gr. 1^-2, younger for reading aloud. When the sun shines on his pillow, a little boy wakes up, plays on the beach, meets his father on the dock, goes sailing till sunset, watches the moon rise, chases fireflies, and goes to bed with the moon shining on his pillow. Armstrong tells the simple story with such grace that the text of Sunshine, Moonshine could easily stand on its own as a poem for young children. Interpreting the verses and showing the changes in light and colors through the day and evening are softly textured illustrations that pick up on images in the poem and extend the story. Firmly rooted in a child's experiences, this book makes a satisfying choice for beginning readers and an appealing read-aloud for younger children. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first readers to motivate children to read, February 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased these books for my 5-year-old daughter who is beginning to read on her own and these Step Into Reading books are excellent as they have a high-interest factor that motivates her to read. The stories are also wonderfully illustrated in full color. Here, the book is about sunshine,"Sun shines on the mountains. Sun shines on the sea" and moon shine, "Moon shines on the houses. Moon shines on the cars."

These Step 1 series are recommended for preschool-K - the stories are in large type and the vocabulary is easy. The stories are also in a rhyming format which makes them easy and fun to read. The full color pictures also provide contextual clues as to the word being used in the text. These early readers have raised my daughter's confidence level in reading, and she is doing so well that I'm purchasing the Step Two books (Preschool-Grade 1). I use these books in conjunction with sight words to reinforce her recognition of common vocabulary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and simple, January 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for my 2 year old daughter because we go to the beach every summer and the imagery in this book is just beautiful. It's a simple rhyming story with only a line or two per page so it's a very quick read but we both enjoy looking at the illustrations and hearing the easy rhyming pattern. All in all a very sweet book.
