5.0 out of 5 stars A Humorous, Original Tale of the West
This was a funny, original, and surprisingly moving story about a young man and his cow/buffalo. Any book that can be as entertaining as this one deserves a five-star rating. I have already recommended it to both adult and young friends. Congratulations on such a wild, woolly and wonderful book, Mr. Hardman

1.0 out of 5 stars Check the used book stores before you buy a copy
Poorly written, shallow characters, nothing happening or much excitement or importance. Derogatory to Native Americans. Sunshine Rider should be Sunset Rider. Bury it and put it to bed and forget a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunshine Rides into a Disney movie, December 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunshine Rider (Hardcover)
I loved this book and I don't care for Westerns, usually, but was intrigued by the title. Then I couldn't put it down. A young boy experiencing his purpose with adventures from medicine men to spiritual gurus on the open range with his pet cattalo. I'm anxiously awaiting the movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and funny, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sunshine Rider (Hardcover)
This book is one of the better kids' books I've read in a while. While funny, the book is also a touching story about coming of age. It will make kids laugh at the pain of growing up. The book is also a history lesson, staying true to its period despite the outrageous events that occur.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read in a long time!, April 2, 2003

I bought the paperback because it sounded interesting. I have never really enjoyed westerns but something about the premise of the book appealed to me. Since starting Sunshine Rider I haven't been able to put it down. It's a terrific book full of humor, adventure and wonderful characters. The plot is full of original events and laugh-out-loud situations. This is one of the best books I have read in quite a while. I have 40 pages left to read and am now taking my time because I don't want the book to end. You don't have to read westerns or be a vegetarian to enjoy this wonderful story. You will be amazed by this sleeper of a book just as I have been.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your average Western..., November 27, 2001

This book is tremendously entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny. At the same time, it incorporates some very serious issues for Wylie. There are some graphic scenes... my eight year old son read this book before I did and I will have to ask him what he thought about that. I am actually amazed that this book hasnt shown up on the challenged book list - I guess the "Beef, Its Whats For Dinner" people haven't gotten a hold of it yet.

I think that the people who didn't like this book may have been expecting a typical "western", which this is not.

5.0 out of 5 stars OH SWEET LORD!, July 11, 2001
A Kid's Review
This is one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long while. It is one of the few novels that mixes good ol-fashioned humor with jokes that have more to them, when you stop and think. A genuinely great novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunshine Rider is an exciting read!, September 19, 2000
By
Peter Wright (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunshine Rider (Hardcover)
Sunshine Rider takes off from page one and keeps you going right up until the end. The story follows the adventures of 17 year old Wylie Jackson from one mistake to the next. While constantly running, Wylie encounters many interesting characters. The story is sprinkled with jokes that are funny enough to get you laughing out loud (and consequently turning a few heads...especially if you are reading in the library). Wylie is a likable character even with all his flaws, and his narration is a lot like Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Anyone who liked that book will enjoy this one as well. I am now anxiously awaiting Moonshine Rider which I'm guessing is the sequel to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunshine Rider brightened my day!, August 12, 2000
By A Customer
I pick up any kind of book that invovles the words 'Rider', 'Texas', or 'Horse', and this time.. i CERTAiNLY wasn't disapointed! Wylie certainly grows on you, and the story's twists and turns can captivate almost anyone. Some may find it flakey.. but anyone with a light sense of humor and anyone who's ever 'chewed the fat' (gotta have done it to know what it means.) will enjoy it. The ending leaves you smiling, although perhaps twisted around. All in all, a GREAT book!

--And when you finish, a dare you to say that you dont want a pet Cattalo of your very own!--
