In short, too much time was spent on background details and not enough time was spent developing the main story.
Sorry to say that I was very disappointed in this book... I really wanted to like it and by the end felt I had wasted my time.
Robin Mckinley writes this story so that the fantasy is believable because it is written with real world raw emotions.
