Book Description

5 and upLet's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2
Are there reasons for the seasons? It all starts with the sun. The sun shines on the Earth and keeps it warm.We have day and night because the Earth spins on its axis and we spend part of each day facing the sun and part of the day facing away from it. But why are days longer in the summer than in the winter? The answer to this question is explained through an experiment using a pencil, an orange, and a flashlight. And when you see this, you'll know the reasons for the seasons.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Colorful illustrations and clear easy-to-read text give this revised edition more appeal than the 1974 edition. The completely rewritten text is better organized with less repetition. It includes less descriptive information about the four seasons and places more emphasis on the causes of seasonal changes. A simply stated and carefully illustrated experiment using an orange, a pencil and a flashlight to help children actually see the differences on earth caused by the tilt of the earth as it rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun is particularly useful. A worthwhile addition, along with the 1974 edition and Berger's Time After Time (Coward, 1975; o.p.). For younger children, Gibbons' Sun Up, S un Down (HBJ, 1983) is a better introduction.Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, Ill.

if you have an energetic child like my 5 year old who is always asking why - this is a great book. I got this book around summer soltice when my sun did not understand why he is going to bed when it is so bright outside. By doing the "experiment" with an orange and a flashlight, I think he understands why we have seasons.

I absolutely love the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out-Science series and for DD's birthday I got a few of the 2nd series books thinking that they would be ok for a 6 year old in Kindergarten who loves science.

We were fine for the introduction and she understood the basic concepts but then she got in over her head and we just looked at the pictures. I would suggest this book for a 2nd grader or an advanced child. It is a really nice book and I suggest it for future scientists!

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good book for kids, January 27, 2010

I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.

This book about the sun and its impact on the seasons is really fun. The diagrams are very well done.
