Book Description

April 1, 1996
From the Sunshine State is a captivating documentation of Florida through the lens of photographer Alex Webb. Rather than the stereotypical images of picture-postcard beaches and perfect Art Deco architecture, this eclectic collection of photographs reveals another side of "the sunshine state." Through his travels from Fort Pierce and Daytona Beach to Key Largo, from Suwanee and Apalachicola to Disney World, Webb's vivid and compelling images reflect an exploratory and questioning approach to his subjects, both people and places. Capturing the diverse cultures and subcultures of Florida, these photographs are at times political foray and sociological documentation, and are at times ironic, impressionistic records of the passage of human lives in society. His accompanying text describes his physical and emotional journey across Florida, giving the reader/viewer a special insight into his personal and unique vision.

Alex Webb's photography books include Crossings: Photographs from the U.S.-Mexico Border, Amazon: From the Floodplains to the Clouds, Under a Grudging Sun: Photographs from Haiti Liberé, Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics, and the limited edition Dislocations. A member of Magnum Photos since 1979, he has received numerous awards and fellowships. Webb's work has been exhibited worldwide, and his images are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the International Center for Photography. His photographs have been published in the New York Times Magazine, Life, Geo, National Geographic, Aperture, and many other magazines.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

There is nothing beautiful about Webb's Florida, a place of overweight retirees, sun-baked college students, idle migrant workers in squalid housing developments, incarcerated immigrants and children so oblivious to their surroundings that they ignore a huge brushfire raging near their soccer game. In Webb's surreal land of billboards, trailer homes, dreary social clubs, tawdry amusement parks, miniature golf courses and plastic kitsch, human-made ugliness is so pervasive that no one seems to notice anymore. A forlorn pelican or lonesome deer may appear, but except for occasional thunderclouds threatening to rain down from a wrathful sky, nature has everywhere been displaced by crassness and sleaze. Webb (Hot Light/ Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics) says in a short statement at the end of the book that most people never find the dreams they are looking for in Florida, and he uses his color photographs to prove his point, depicting a nightmarish world that is mindless, eerie and more than a little disturbing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and important, May 9, 2000

This review is from: From the Sunshine State: Photographs of Florida (Hardcover)
The images in this book provide a seldom-seen commentary on aspects of life within a state know primarily for its tourism industry. Here, Alex Webb pulls back the curtain to reveal the other worlds that co-exist with most of the images tha come to mind when we hear the word "Florida." These photographs wildly exceed one's expectations for just how perfect a seemingly random moment can be, and Webb manages to do it with an eye for the abstract, the absurd, and while providing social commentary, humor and beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great photographer's best, June 30, 2006

in terms of color street photography, this is about as good as it gets. along with people like robert walker, costa manos, and anthony hernandez, webb helped create a new genre, perceptive and intuitive like cartier-bresson with the eyes of a colorist. webb has a few great books, this is my favorite.

as publishing goes, i'd say this book is average, and an updated, expanded edition would be great.
