About the Author

Carly Joelle Strickland has been in love with art since she learned to color inside the lines. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in Illustration. While at SCAD she was involved in Writer’s Block and played Ophelia in a studio production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. During the summer before her senior year, Carly held a graphic design internship at EBSCO Media. Carly is the proud mother of two fancy rats, Queenie and Duchess, expect to see them in a future Matter Deep story. She loves old Star Trek episodes and says the word “awesome” an awful lot. Kyle Martin Strickland was born in Florida, raised in Alabama, and– owing to a serious mental illness called love– spent a year living in Massachusetts during one of the iciest winters on record. He has a Professional Writing Degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design. During his years at SCAD, Kyle was President of the student club Writer’s Block, active in theater and gaming. He worked as an editorial intern at Crane Hill Publishing and had short fiction published in An Alabama Christmas and A Florida Christmas. Kyle is a legendary Game Master among his co-SCAD grads and a trained Mime. Look for his Bite-Sized Fiction through Matter Deep Publishing.

More About the Author

Carly Strickland is a digital illustrator based in Birmingham, Alabama, and her favorite word is awesome. She tries not to take anything too seriously and is very small. She likes pet rats the best, but she supposes her step-cat will do. She is part owner and art director of Matter Deep Publishing, a creative and independent company, and she draws them an awfully lot of pictures.

Her published works include Sunshine's Night Out, Mothership Goose, Awesome Like a Possum, and Say No to Sparkles. See more on her website

This book is so adorable and beautiful. My daughter (2 1/2 years old) LOVED to hear the story about Sunshine, and loved to find Sunshine on all the pages. I read the book to her, then she read it back to me. The wonderful part is that we could make up the story as we went along, she doesn't have to be able to read to tell me Sunshine's wonderful story. The drawing is really beautiful with gentle outlines and a soft, comic-book feel. It makes it easy to follow the story, without having to adhere to a strict, linear storytelling structure.

My daughter's favorite part was the cover. She loved to see Sunshine on the front, and Sunshine's backside on the back cover!
