Sonic Youth/Metric Fans Should Rejoice,
This review is from: Sunshower EP (MP3 Download)
Saw them recently at a sparsely populated show here in-town, and bought their EP, couldn't feel worse for them, they should be playing in front of hundreds/thousands every night.
The Sunshower EP is noticeably more mature and toned-down from their debut, but takes them in a positive direction and will no doubt elicit comparisons to Emily Haines and Metric. Yet Marnie is the sole guitar player and vocalist, and her talent and sound is huge for a waif-like, stringy blonde who doubled as a college "ethics" instructor. I have to admit it makes them that much more appealing. No doubt influenced by the great Austin, TX music scene where they originate, they bring forth an energy and attention to good guitar riffs and moody numbers the Indie scene has been missing for a while. I can help but to think of Kim Gordon at times when I hear Marnie scream or during the catchy, low-key processions of the "Sunshower" track. I hate to compare fairly original musicians to others, but it's a bit undeniable here, yet it does not take away from their appeal at all, and she sets herself apart with plenty of original guitar playing and a fantastic voice, crafting loud, rocking songs that intertwine with moodier, introspective lyrics and the classic loud/quiet/loud formula that never gets old when done right. Really looking forward to their next album due out on 8/31/11, I sense they're going places.

Saw ume opening for the Toadies at the St. Paddies day concert.
Bought the 180 gram gold vinyl album. It's outstanding. Great music, excellent production quality as well. Not to mention the beautiful lead singer even autographed it for me!

Ooo-may!,
This review is from: Sunshower EP (MP3 Download)
The Sunshower Ep is an amazing effort. Greatly surpassing their previous full-length which couldn't quite capture the intense and brooding sound the band puts on live. This is an ep worth owning to hold you over until their next album. If you're unsure about the ep try out Pendulum, Conductor or Sunshower.
I wouldn't recommend buying their first album try downloading these songs. Hurricane Baby Xie Xie (Usually a closer at their shows) Manic

This EP is sooooooo fantastic. A friend sent me the video for "The Conductor" because he thought it might be up my alley. I liked it. Then I found myself going back and watching it over and over. Then I started cybertracking the band. Then I added them on Facebook and MySpace. Then I purchased the whole record. And now, after having it for two weeks, it's entered the realm of obsessive heavy rotation.
Straightforward, catchy as hell indie guitar ROCK. R-O-C-K. I should add that it does NOT forsake dynamics, tension, and deceptively complex layers of musical magic. Sonic Youth and Pixies comparisons are inevitable. The vocals go from soft coo to gritty growls, all the while with a kiss of sassy smart ass. I can't wait for the full-length.

This is a great band from the Austin,TX area. Sunshower is a bit more controlled than the out of control energy of Urgent Sea (also an excellent CD). Lauren Larson's singing and guitar playing has a fresh amount of energy. Spin Mag. cited UME as one of the 7 "undiscoverd" indie bands currently. Pick up Sunshower and Urgent Sea and prepare to have a great time listening.
