In "Sunspot," Laurie Birnsteel, a Hawaii native who currently lives in Louisville, has created a book that really should have been written a long, long time ago. But it wasn't, and for that alone she deserves credit. But she has also walked a fine line between silly and serious - something that takes skill. For those who put no stock in astrology - especially PET astrology - Birnsteel's cheeky approach to this book provides a knowing wink. Simultaneously, for those who do, she never condescends or makes light of the subject matter.
By breaking doggy astrological traits down into "bad doggy" and "good doggy" columns, she makes it an easy read, and testimony from actual dog owners is the hook. The book ends with a "survey" so that, if you don't know your dog's birthdate, you can determine what sign your pooch falls under. All in all, it's clear that Birnsteel is an animal lover who is merely enjoying the opportunity provided by a part of her life that she holds dear. Dog lovers will eat this up, especially if consumed as a light read. Others probably will scoff. Either way, it will be a welcome addition to your coffee table.
