Biography

Pianist and composer Michel Camilo was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1954. Fascinated with music since childhood, he composed his first song at the age of five, then studied for 13 years at the National Conservatory. At 16, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Piano Jazzzzzzzzz!!!, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Suntan (Audio CD)
And again Camilo keeps on showing us that just a piano can take away your attention. All three performers on this disk are amazing, not only they keep confusing tempos, but also feature outstanding technical resources. I first heard the last track of this cd on tv, it was a concert in Netherlands, and inmediately I got the record, a must on a good piano jazz collection. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars SSSMMMOOOOOOOOOKKKKINNNNNNNN!!!!!, October 1, 2004
This review is from: Suntan (Audio CD)
Now THIS is a piano trio with some teeth!!!

Want to introduce someone to Michel Camilo's fiery artistry on piano, this is a great place to start! The ideas just flow relentlessly as Michel challenges his musicians and not only that but they sound like they're having the time of their lives!

All 5 songs are top notch both in their composition and execution. The beautiful thing about a piano trio is that it allows the musicians so much creative room, and here is a great example of them making the most of it! 4 out the 5 pieces are Camilo originals, very colorful and diverse, intense and playful at the same instance, with the exception of the beautiful ballad "Los Olas" that lets forth colorful melodies and chords.

One of the high points is the trio's reading of Jaco Pastorious' "Used To Be A Cha-Cha" where they invest it with some serious ferocity, it sounds like it was written just specially for Michel! In the free middle section, the real genius of bassist Anthony Jackson comes to the fore as he spins off ghostly melodies and chords on his 6-stringed monster (I've always thought of him as an understated genius, who doesn't blow you away with displays of chops but rather blows you away with surprising ideas and his gift of spontaneously reharmonizing music).

Music-making at a very highly evolved level and so much fun to boot! GRAB IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert Island Album, May 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Suntan (Audio CD)
Wow! I was hipped to this by the guitarist in my college band. I have listened to this tape, (now CD), easily a hundred times, and each time I hear a little different inflection, bend, emphasis, etc. This is about as good as it gets...Michel Camilo, Dave Weckl, and Anthony Jackson are just MONSTERS on this recording. Focus on each of their individual performances: a joy; but then step back and understand how well they are playing off of each other to create this living, breathing force: it's awesome! From the time changes that Weckl plows through, to the subterranean grooves of Mr. Jackson's contrabass, to Camilo's pushing the melodic envelope of his own creation!!!....
This disc is like Vince Guaraldi crossed with Schwarzenegger crossed with the ethereal plane!
It's complicated stuff, but even after so many listenings, it never fails to impress me...definately one of the discs I would take with me to the desert island.....
