This review is from: 24 Game: Fractions/Decimals (Toy)
As a middle school math teacher, I was constantly frustrated by many students' appalling lack of command of basic math. Learning algebra without having things like the times tables already firmly in place is a torturous and usually hopeless endeavor. The vital importance of young children learning and memorizing the fundamentals cannot be stressed enough.
The 24 Game is the most effective, easy and appealing device I ever found for helping kids to shore up their foundations in the basic understanding of numbers. Most kids love playing it, and the game forces players to exercise their brains. Because the number 24 has so many factors, there are often multiple answers for a card, which enhances students' understanding of how numbers work in different situations.
My only complaint is that there really ought to be a set of solutions available somewhere. Some of these cards had me and my best students stumped and I still can't figure them out. There are some online "solver" programs, but none of them seem to be able to deal with fractions.
Still, the 24 Game is a masterpiece, elegant in its simplicity and offering a challenge to even the most advanced students.
