Book Description

September 2001 9 and up4 and up
In search of his father, Shade discovers a mysterious human building which houses a huge forest. Home to thousands of bats, the indoor forest is as warm as a summer night, teeming with insect food, and free from the deadly owls. Paradise? Then why are bats disappearing without trace? Soon, Shade and his friend, Marina, are swept up in a perilous adventure that takes them far south to the jungle home of Goth, the diabolical king of the cannibal bats...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 In this sequel (S&S, 2000) to Kenneth Oppel's Silverwing (S&S, 1999), Shade, a silverwing bat, and Marina, a brightwing, continue their search for Shade's father. They are drawn to and enter a pseudo forest built by humans and, although the bats there call it "Paradise," Shade soon realizes it is a prison for the animals. He is selected along with other bats, and a disc is sewn on their abdomens. When they are flown to a target and released, Shade just manages to escape the fate of most of the bats - exploding when they hit the target. Shade joins a group of other survivors and learns that his father is possibly still alive but about to be sacrificed along with other bats and animals by a colony of vampire bats led by Shades old nemesis, Goth. Shade enlists the help of rats and owls to stage a dramatic rescue. John McDonough's word-for-word reading of this exciting tale is well-paced, expressive, and clear. Although this story will be better appreciated by listeners familiar with the first book - and fan's of that book will certainly want to hear this one - this sequel stands on its own. -Louise Sherman, formerly Anna C. From Booklist

Taking up the story begun in the Canadian fantasy Silverwing (1997), this sequel begins with Shade, the Silverwing bat, still intent on finding his father. Shade and his companions become trapped in a research facility where many of their species are fitted with bombs and sent by humans to destroy a wartime target. After a series of adventures, alliances between old enemies, and violent confrontations with the forces of evil, Shade prevails in battle, in love, and in rescuing his father. Action packed and suspenseful, this continuing adventure can be read on its own but will appeal most to those fantasy fans who enjoyed the detailed bat world of the first novel. 5.0 out of 5 stars Sunwing: A fantastic sequel to a fantastic book, June 21, 2000
By
Gilad barlev (Silver Spring, Maryland (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunwing (Hardcover)
This is the story of Shade, a young silverwing bat. As in "Silverwing," nothing is as it seems. When he and his family and friends are trapped in a human-made paradise, everyone else seems content except for Shade, who questions the humans' motives. It is not long before hundreds bats start disappearing. Shade and his Brightwing friend Marina once again embark on a journey that takes them far south to the home of the Vampyrum Spectrum and the homeland of the evil batgod Cama Zotz. What follows is a non-stop adventure that will keep you reading through the night, but I'm not going to spoil the ending for you. You'll have to read it, yourself.
