Product Description

These baby soft 100% pure alpaca wool reversible throw blankets are incredibly luxurious to touch.  They are top quality and light weight yet very warm blankets that also can be used as throws. This one is a beautiful shade of solid rich black that is now the ultimate in softness and cuddliness and will make an elegant finishing touch to any well-appointed bed. It is a large approximate 60 inches wide by 86 inches long, which will cover a double or queen size bed, and now weighs approximately 29 fuller ounces. Colors may vary slightly from the pictures shown. It was expertly hand woven in Ecuador and our label is attached. Why pay inflated name brand prices? The comparable retail price of this blanket is $310.00 but your normal price is only $185.95 while this Limited Time Special 40% Off is only $104.95.

In case you did not know, alpaca is a specialty luxury fiber. More alpaca fiber is produced each year than cashmere or mohair. No other animal produces fiber that has the softness of cashmere, the luster of silk, the lightness of goose feathers, the durability of wool, and the warmth of a cozy fireplace. The alpaca has been domesticated (as versus its kin llama, which is primarily a work animal) and carefully bred for over 5,000 years as a luxury fiber-producing animal. Alpaca wool has been prized for centuries for its incredible combination of softness, lightness, and warmth. Alpaca is best cared for by dry cleaning although light soiling can frequently be removed with water, especially if the stain has not set.

This is quality merchandise at a great price. And you no longer have to wait 10 to 21 days for this gorgeous alpaca blanket to be delivered from South America. We now store our inventory at Amazon warehouses in the USA and this product is eligible for FREE Super Saver and Prime Two-Day Shipping.

Washed it in Woolite, gentle cycle, hoping to get rid of some of the pelling/lint/fuzz but no such luck. :(

Do not buy this product, it is not 100% alpaca wool! In the video, I first heat a fiber sample from a wool hat so you can see what natural fibers do when heated. Notice how it does not shrink into a little gooey ball and when touched after it is basically ash. Next, I heat a sample from the "100% alpaca wool" blanket. Notice how it melts into a little gooey plastic ball which is sticky when touched. Finally, I heat a sample from an acrylic blanket. Notice how it acts very much like the "100% alpaca wool" sample.

The seller needs to stop selling these and make good on the ones he's already sold.

I bought a burgundy blanket from the same company over a year ago for my husband's birthday and finally got a chance to use it the other day (he was out of town). I am allergic to wool, so I hesitated briefly, but the blanket wooed me with it's softness. When he came back, (and reclaimed his blanket)I promptly ordered one for myself. It is incredibly soft, does not make me itch at all, and I adore it. It seemed awfully thin initially, but is incredibly cozy. This blanket is totally worth every penny, and is going on my list of things that would make perfect gifts for anyone!

I was looking for something to replace a mil. surplus wool blanket I have. This alpaca blanket is as warm as the wool blanket despite weighing 1/2 as much. It is also queen size so it covers the whole bed. The alpaca is much softer. The blanket is pretty light, which is actually a problem for me because it is easily kicked off if you are one who moves around in your sleep like I do. But thats not really the blankets fault. Overall for the price its worth it.

3/13/12 update:
Im pretty sure this is not 100% alpaca. I think that is it probably 50/50 acrylic alpaca. I pulled some loose strands off and twisted them up, and lit it with a lighter. It burns like the fuse of a firecracker. Then it left a hard ball of material. If it was natural fiber it would burn slowly and leave nothing but ash. It still is a good blanket, just not as good of a deal if it were 100% alpaca.

Here is the textile the burning test of one of these Ecuadorian "alpaca" blankets.
The result of burning the fiber from this Ecuadorian blanket is "a hard irregularly-shaped black bead". That is the typical result of the test for an acrylic textile.
For comparison a Peruvian blanket made of 55% alpaca and 45% wool is shown on the same test. The result is "a black, hollow irregular bead that can be easily crushed into a gritty black powder. It is self-extinguishing, i.e., it burns itself out."
As described on the document named "The_Burn_Test_to_Identify_Textile_Fibers.pdf" search for it.
You can also search for videos about textile burning tests to identify fibers.
