Product Description

These baby soft 100% pure alpaca wool reversible throw blankets are incredibly luxurious to touch.  They are top quality and light weight yet very warm blankets that also can be used as throws. This one is a beautiful shade of woven brown and cream that is now the ultimate in softness and cuddliness and will make an elegant finishing touch to any well-appointed bed. It is a large approximate 60 inches wide by 86 inches long, which will cover a double or queen size bed, and now weighs approximately 29 fuller ounces. Colors may vary slightly from the pictures shown. It was expertly hand woven in Ecuador and our label is attached. Why pay inflated name brand prices? The comparable retail price of this blanket is $310.00 but your normal price is only $185.95 while this Limited Time Special 40% Off is only $109.95.

In case you did not know, alpaca is a specialty luxury fiber. More alpaca fiber is produced each year than cashmere or mohair. No other animal produces fiber that has the softness of cashmere, the luster of silk, the lightness of goose feathers, the durability of wool, and the warmth of a cozy fireplace. The alpaca has been domesticated (as versus its kin llama, which is primarily a work animal) and carefully bred for over 5,000 years as a luxury fiber-producing animal. Alpaca wool has been prized for centuries for its incredible combination of softness, lightness, and warmth. Alpaca is best cared for by dry cleaning although light soiling can frequently be removed with water, especially if the stain has not set.

This is quality merchandise at a great price. And you no longer have to wait 10 to 21 days for this gorgeous alpaca blanket to be delivered from South America. We now store our inventory at Amazon warehouses in the USA and this product is eligible for FREE Super Saver and Prime Two-Day Shipping.

This blanket is not Alpaca, but some sort of polyester. When I burned a few fibers, they turned into a little hard ball, not ash, and did not smell like fur or hair. The description for this item is fraudulent. Amazon should ban this seller.

Also, the blanket does not look like the photo. The photo has an appealing color variation that makes it look natural. The actual blanket is entirely uniform in color.

The seller even puts a sheet into the package telling about how ancient alpacas are, how great the wool is, how to clean it, and so on. It is all part of the fraud. Really brazen.

After going round&round with the website, I chose the option to call Amazon. They answered quickly, and Melissa sorted out everything and sent me a return label, and the blanket will go back on Monday.

After reading all the reviews we took a chance and ordered two of these throws--
one for me, and one for my husband--and boy, are we glad we did! We love them! They arrived much sooner than we expected, given they were travelling from Ecuador to northern California (in about 2 weeks). We use them as throws while watching TV.
They are large (which is great, because we're both tall--unlike a lot of throws that are skimpy--these are the size of blankets, so plenty of room to tuck under your feet and pull up to your chin. As another reviewer noted, I wondered how warm they would be, given how lightweight they are, but they are very warm and cozy. We ordered the "soft brown earth tone cream" color, which is an elegant blend of ivory and taupe yarns. One note: The four edges are finished "flat" (vs. turned under) with a machine overlock stitch (using an ivory-colored soft yarn on our throws)--and the corners are rounded. This is the only thing I wasn't 100% sold on--I would have preferred a more finished edge, like a hand sewn rolled edge (which I might try doing myself) or a woven edge like on a pashmina scarf--but it's a minor drawback. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat. Finally, I had wondered whether alpaca might be kind of scratchy like mohair, but happily these throws feel just like cashmere! These are a great price for the quality!

I bought this blanket after reading all the positive reviews in Amazon and probably I had over expectation.

The positive points: material is 100% wool and soft, decent size (can easily cover twin size bed), light weight, non scratchy even when new and fast international shipping.

Coming to the negative points: I tested this blanket for the warmth, and tried it the first night as a single blanket with room temperature at 65 F. OMG, I woke up midnight to have an additional blanket with it. I assume the primary reason for feeling cold was due to blanket being thin. I added another blanket and it gives me warmth even at 65 F (The other blanket is also thin and I feel cold if I use it alone).
The second issue is wool separating constanatly from blanket. I assume with time once the loose wool is separated, this should no longer happen. But my other blanket is covered with loose wool, and sometimes my beard in the morning too.

Final verdict: You definitely need an additonal blanket in cold room temperature. Better labelled as a throw rather than a blanket. Lastly it is expensive if you buy it to use as a throw.

I think the blanket is beautiful. The issue I had was when I placed the order, I assumed that it was in the US. I had no idea that the product was NOT in this country. I received an email that the product was coming from Ecuador, and it would take 2-3 weeks with transit. It came very fast I received it January 10th, ( I ordered it 12/19/2010). My point is when something is put on Amazon, we the customers, should know this information up front. It would have changed my decision on which product I would have purchased.

This is not a 100% alpaca blanket. The burn test reveals that acrylic is the main component.

This video clearly shows the result of the burning test of one of these Ecuadorian "alpaca" blankets.

The result of burning the fiber from this Ecuadorian blanket is "a hard irregularly-shaped black bead". That is the typical result of the test for an acrylic textile.
For comparison a Peruvian blanket made of 55% alpaca and 45% wool is shown on the same test. The result is "a black, hollow irregular bead that can be easily crushed into a gritty black powder. It is self-extinguishing, i.e., it burns itself out."

As described on the document named "The_Burn_Test_to_Identify_Textile_Fibers.pdf" search for it.

You can also search for videos about textile burning tests to identify fibers.

My husband has always thought alpacas were cool... so I got him this really thinking it would be great and he'd love it. He does love it... I do not. It is warm and soft but it sheds like crazy - more than my dog. Who wants to get up after cuddling under a blanket and have hair all over them? :P

This blanket is extremely thin and at first glance would not appear to be able to warm anything. However this blanket is extremely warm and breathes very well. I have replaced my cotton blanket with this for the winter and it is sufficient to keep me warm on cold nights. It is also about the softest blanket that I have ever felt. The only thing that I dislike is the size of the blanket. I have a queen bed with a mattress pad on it and it barely covers the top of my mattress. I would like to see maybe another 4 inches in width. This is really just my personal preference though.
