Book Description

December 2004
In the lead up to the 50th anniversary of television in Australia, Pluto Press is publishing the definitive history of Australian soaps. Author Andrew Mercado has spent years researching Aussie Soaps, interviewing the stars and producers for a behind the scenes look at one of Australia’s most important export and cultural businesses.

SUPER AUSSIE SOAPS contains the history of every Australian television serial, in chronological order from 1958 to the present including such-loved classics as Bellbird, Number 96, The Sullivans, Prisoner, Sons and Daughters, Neighbours and Home and Away.

Australian soaps are watched and loved by audiences all over the world, particularly the phenomenally popular Prisoner, Neighbours and Home and Away.

But Aussies have been watching soaps since 1958 and while some of the early shows may not be familiar to overseas audiences, each one of them led to the later successes.

From the innocent charms of the 50s and 60s, to the sex n' sin sagas of the 70s, through to the decadent 80s until everything was thrown on its head with the unbelievable success of the suburban Neighbours, every soap, in its own way, led to the later successes.

Now, for the first time, the complete history of all these shows is told, in chronological order from1958 to the present.

- which soap had a visit from the then-Australian Prime Minister?
- which soap had questions asked about it in Moscow parliament?
- which soap featured a cameo from Olivia Newton-John?
- which soap featured an early performance from Nicole Kidman?
- which soap was originally pitched as being about an undercover nun?

About the Author

Andrew Mercado is the authority on Australian TV soaps and is a star of Pay TV’s Channel V and Music Max. Andrew has been fascinated with Aussie soaps ever since his parents wouldn't let him watch Number 96 back in the 70s. Instead, he devoured every other Aussie soap on offer (and eventually was even allowed to watch the controversial Number 96 which is still his favourite TV show of all time). After years of serial viewing, he eventually ended up working behind the scenes on Gold Coast-based soaps Paradise Beach and Pacific .

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for true Aussie soap fans, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Super Aussie Soaps: Behind the Scenes of Australia's Best Loved TV Shows (Paperback)
Although not officially available in the UK yet, this book is an absolute must for anybody who has enjoyed the mass raft of Australian soaps & drama's that have been screened in the UK, as well as all the one's that never quite made it over here! Indeed, as an Australian book, it covers all the soaps produced from the 50's the first being 'Autumn Affair', through to the present day, where hits such as 'Kath & Kim' and 'The Secret Life of Us' are also included.
However, the real interest for me here are the Aussie soaps produced in the 70's and 80's where Andrew Mercado gives a quirky, detailed analysis of the biggies such as Prisoner, The Young Doctors, Sons and Daughters, Neighbours, Home and Away, E Street and A Country Practice. Furthermore, even the big soap 'flops' make it into the book, creating an even more fascinating insight into why certain genre's of Aussie soap failed - obviously, the idea's behind Holiday Island, Taurus Rising, Possession, Prime Time, Waterloo Station, Starting Out, Richmond Hill all looked good on paper, but when it came to capturing a devoted audience, they all flopped spectacularly and here, Mercado offers his opinion's as to why. Also, the less successful 90's soaps such as cult favourite Chances, the dismall Paradise Beach, Echo Point and Breakers all get the Mercado over view.
With never-seen-before behind the scenes pictures and quotes, this book will keep you entertained for hours, making you wish that all these soaps will one day, get a repeat run so we can all enjoy the camp camadarie of the unique world of Aussie soaps!
