This is an excellent adaption of the original game to the Game Boy Color. Now you can play the classic, history-making first game anywhere, even if you don't have a tv or plugg-ins! 3.0 out of 5 stars Disfunctional Save Feature
The game is great and is absolutely what all the five-star reviews say it is, and think so too. The only downside of purchasing this game is the save feature may not work correctly, as mine does, which does not allow players to keep unlocked items such as The Lost Levels, which was mainly why I had ordered Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. To keep data that would be erased...

This is an excellent adaption of the original game to the Game Boy Color. Now you can play the classic, history-making first game anywhere, even if you don't have a tv or plugg-ins! There are a whole lot of add-ons to this game. First of all, they changed some parts of the game for the better. Then they also added the lost levels of the game that can only be accessed when you reach a specific high score (of which I can't remember). They also have a racing activity with Boo the ghost and a challenge version of the game where finding red coins and Yoshi's eggs are as important as finishing the levels, too. And there's also a "verses" edition, where you can play against one of your friends (or enemies, of course). Whoever adapted this game to the Game Boy Color said "I want this version of the game to be even better," and they did a wonderful job. The graphics even look better! The Game Boy screen is too small to fit the entire layout of the levels onto it at the same time, so you have to look around using the "Up" and "Down" buttons. But that's okay, 'cause that just adds on to the challenge of the game! I only gave this video game 4 1/2 stars because you will still want to see yourself play on the big screen, but I would recommend this version of the classic game to anyone who liked it back in 1985. You'll probobly like this version even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review from a Grown-up Gamer., September 8, 2000

Hey, this is the same game I played on the original Nintendo Entertainment System back in the '80s! I played that game for many hours and now I remember why. It's a fun and challenging game. It's not so difficult that it becomes frustrating. And, you get lots of lives and lots of options to continue from the level you last reached. You play Mario or Luigi. They are plumbers, but that's not central to the story unless you consider the many pipes you go into and jump over in the game. Some of the levels are underwater. Some of them are in dungeons. Mario or Luigi defeat their enemies by jumping on top of them. But, many enemies are best avoided. Watch those jumps, though. After death by touching an enemy, falling into the abyss below is the leading cause of Mario fatalities. This is my first Gameboy game, so I can't compare it to other Gameboy titles. Suffice it to say, I bought this game based upon it's good reviews and I am not disappointed. I recommend it highly, especially for people who remember playing the NES in 1985!

Super Mario Brothers Deluxe is an exact copy of the original Nintendo game. All the same graphics, levels, and even cheats are the same. Even if you beat the original game, this version has a few things added. There's a mode where you race a friend or the computer, a table which has all the Toads that you've unlocked which will let you print out banners and such on the game boy printer, a fortune teller where if you are very lucky you earn five extra lives, and a challenge mode where you have to have a high score, gain red coins and find a yoshi's egg. There is also a picture gallery similar to Zelda Dx. which has pictures of enemies and scenes from the game. This game is pure fun.

Excellent port from the NES version. If you've played Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario All-Stars, you know what you're getting into. Got the game, and, while it took a little adjustment (it felt a little odd playing SMB on Game Boy, but I got over it real soon), I was into the game in no time.

For anyone who owned an NES or played SMB in the arcades, this is a must buy. It is exactly the way it was back then. It has the "Lost Levels" and special "Toy Box" features. Gotta love that. The one gripe I have is that, because it is an exact port of the NES version, sometimes you have to scroll the screen (by using up or down) to see the picture. I'll admit that the first few times through, I wasted a few lives accidentally hitting Koopa Troopa's I didn't see, and Lakitu was usually above the screen dropping Spiny's, so I didn't know where he was unless I scrolled up. Other than that, it's an awesome game. A must have for anyone who had an NES or, like me, wasted quarters at the arcade on SMB.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a great game. There are tons of levels and enemies. If you liked Mario on the NES, you'll love this game. The graphics are great and it's just like the NES. There are tons of things to do-besides the main game, there is a whole new harder game to unlock once you get a certain number of points. You can be Mario or Luigi. You can race agains the computer or a friend with a link cable. There is a mode where you go through the levels and find coins and yoshi eggs. The game isn't too hard to beat but the new game you unlock is harder but just as fun. I haven't found all the coins and yoshi eggs for all the levels yet...it takes a long time. This game does NOT get old - i've had it for almost a year and its still great because there are so many things to do. One small problem, though is you can't get yoshi, which would have made it a little funner.but still a great game!

sorry if i bored you

I really love this game. In it's chips are the options to play a lot of hours with or mini games on the side. In the long run game you can be Luigi or Mario. with the mini games you cn fight Boo, get your fortune told, look at Maroi/Luigi in difrent places. Go under Challenge where you can play the levels you have passed in a atempt to collect all the red coins and sometimes a egg wich becomesa Yoshi. Set up a calender. And try to set a high score. BOTTOM LINE:IT IS A FABULOUS GAME YOU SHOULD GET!

All I can say is WOW! Nintendo did an amazing job with recreating the best video game ever for the Game Boy Color. Every little detail from the first game released way back in 1985 is here along with some extra goodies. After beating the original game you get to play the "Star Levels." it may seem like the same thing you just played at first but a closer look shows the game is much tougher and more difficult to defeat. For example in world 1-1, every goomba that you could simply defeat with a fireball is replaced by a "Buzzy Beetle" who can only be beaten by stomping on it and sometimes they're very hard to jump directly on without dying. There is also much less time to defeat the levels, meaning Mario's gotta move his butt a lot faster and it may be a little hard for him if you know what i mean. Combine that with extra treats like mini games where you have to find Yoshi's coins, eggs, etc. and even a race course where you take on the ghost boo (who is very fast) and you have an exciting game that will keep you on edge from the second you pop it in. You have to have good reflexes and be aware at all times to beat this game and there's never a dull moment. An enemy is never far away. Every young video game player should play this one to be shown what a video game should really be, not like some other snoozefests like Final Fantasy that I have played where you might just walk around for ten minutes before anything interesting happens. Take a lesson from Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto, game developers, this is how us gamers want our games, it ain't always graphics sometimes good gameplay can do more than any 3D effects or FMV sequences ever could. keep it simple like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unbelieveable!, November 16, 2000

This review is from: Super Mario Brothers Deluxe (Video Game)
I wasn't alive when the original Super Mario Bros. came out, but I do faintly remember playing it when I was young, and I faintly remember liking it. When I went to Target to get a game, since Pokemon Pinball wasn't there, I got this game instead. I realized that this game was a better choice than Pokemon Pinball. First off, the graphics are marvelous, and proves that GBC is just as good as the NES, if not better. Another thing good about this game is the new save system(I knew it was new because I had a friend who had the original for the NES). They also installed a new challenge mode which is very tough, but later in the game, there is a new item in the Toy Box that gives hints to where all the Yoshi Eggs are. The Toy Box has options like Fortune telling which can be very amusing(And get you five more lives to start with if you get an Extremely Lucky card) and tons of printouts for the Game Boy Printer. You might also want to have a Link Cable and a friend with this game handy for the Vs. Mode. In this mode, you can race your opponent on the special race courses. You can also play this mode in one-player, with Boo as your opponent. There is also a new Photo Gallery, which takes a picture every time you do something new, like stomp a new enemy, or trade high scores with a friend with the Infared sensor. Yes, I said high scores, another new feature. But this is all aside from the main game. The game isn't really too challenging until the last world, but I noticed that you can jump higher in this game than any other 2D Mario adventure I've played so far. Once you beat the main game, you get the Star levels, which are a little more challenging anyway. And once you get the high score, you can get to the Lost Levels, which are EXTREMELY hard, and the last of them has TWO Bowsers! Definetly a great buy, because of all the time put into a game like this.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Super Mario Brothers Deluxe (Video Game)
I received Super Mario Bros.(along with my first GameBoy Color) for the Christmas I was 11. What a perfect game for starting out with! I, having already owned a regular GameBoy Pocket, knew how to use the controls as well. But on top of being a great game for experienced users, this game is truly a good introduction for someone who has never even picked a GameBoy up before. It isn't the classic, (but I hear you can get that version for GameBoy Advance now :)) but it has 32 levels of increasing difficulty plus bonus levels and a series of racing games against Boo (a ghost) that are unlocked by reaching the Warp Zone in level 4-2 (Oh-No, I'm giving it away!!). Overall, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is great fun for anyone who loves video games of average difficulty (I, on the other hand, just love video games :) !!!!)
